The effect of physical effort on retinal activity in the human eye: rod and cone flicker electroretinogram studies

Abstract: Rod-mediated responses were more susceptible to effort-induced homeostasis disruptions than the cone-mediated responses. The application of ERGs may be used as neurophysiological criteria in defining the cardiovascular status of the physical performance.

“…hormonal and cardiovascular), including the ocular physiology. 5 In this regard, there have been several ocular indices such as the neural conductivity in the visual pathway, 6 neuro-retinal activity, 7 tear osmolarity, 8 intraocular pressure (IOP), 9 and optic nerve and macular perfusion, 10 among others, that have revealed to be sensitive to physical effort. In the last years, due to the positive association between mean levels and peaks of IOP and the risk of glaucoma, 11 numerous researchers have focused on the short- and long-term effects of different types of physical exercise on IOP.…”

“…1921), the optimal exercise intensity for benefit to retina is unstudied and unknown. Ocular blood flow increases with biking intensity in humans,22 and rod-mediated signaling decreases with greater exercise intensity, whereas cone-mediated signaling is unaffected 23. A variety of exercise regimens have been used in exercise studies, but the influence of varying exercise intensities on protection in retinal disease has not been systematically tested.…”

“…As highlighted above, a portable ERG device can provide low-cost, noninvasive, and rapidly and widely available biomarkers of ocular and systemic diseases within the framework of oculomics. It may also provide a surrogate for general health, as the level of physical fitness seems to have an impact on the changes of b-wave electroretinogram and P100 of visual evoked potentials [52,53].…”
