Rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis (Willd.) Muell.Arg.) are cultivated for latex production, but they also produce timber for industry, and logging residues can be used for power generation. In this study, we determined the biomass of above- and below-ground tree compartments (leaves, branches <3 cm in diameter, branches 3–5 cm in diameter, stumps and roots) of 20-, 25-, and 30-year-old rubber tree plantations in Songkhla province, southern Thailand, at the clear-cutting stage. We also studied the nutrient content and heating value of the compartments. The total dry mass (including leaves, branches, stems and stumps and roots) of the mature rubber wood stands was 157–289 Mg ha−1. The residual harvestable dry mass without leaves (39–68 Mg ha−1, branches <5 cm in diameter, stumps and roots) comprised 25% of the total dry mass. Nutrient concentrations were highest in the leaves, followed by small branches. In most cases, the stems and larger branches had similar concentrations. One ton of rubber tree biomass (leaves and stumps and roots included) contained an average of 2.4 kg N, 0.2 kg P, 3.4 kg K, and 4.8 kg Ca. Depending on the biomass of the stands, the rubber trees had 380–700 kg, 36–64 kg, 530–980 kg, and 750–1360 kg of bound N, P, K, and Ca per hectare, respectively. The effective heating value of the stumps and roots was the lowest (17.65 MJ kg−1). Stems and branches were similar (18.37–18.58 MJ kg−1), and leaves were the highest (20.34 MJ kg−1). The unharvested residual biomass in southern Thailand is a potential fuel source for power generation.

Pemeliharaan tanaman karet melalui pemupukan merupakan salah satu langkah penting yang harus dilakukan untuk mencapai pertumbuhan dan produksi yang optimal. Akhir-akhir ini ketersediaan pupuk yang terbatas, harga yang terus meningkat, dan harga karet yang rendah menyebabkan kegiatan pemupukan pada perkebunan karet sering tertunda. Selain penundaan kegiatan pemupukan juga terjadi pengurangan dosis dan bahkan meniadakan kegiatan pemupukan. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hasil-hasil penelitian dalam upaya peningkatan efisiensi pemupukan pada tanaman karet sehingga biaya pemupukan dapat dikurangi. Hasil-hasil penelitian sebelumnya menunjukkan bahwa pemupukan dapat dikurangi sampai 75% dari dosis pupuk tunggal apabila menerapkan teknologi pemupukan menggunakan pupuk majemuk dengan tambahan slow release agent yang sering disebut dengan Slow Release Fertilizer (SRF) dan upaya lain dengan menggunakan kombinasi pupuk tunggal dengan pupuk hayati. Selain itu penentuan dosis rekomendasi harus mempertimbangkan sifat tanah sehubungan dengan kapasitas tanah dalam menyediakan unsur hara untuk tanaman, faktor lingkungan yang mempengaruhi efisiensi pemupukan, serta kebutuhan tanaman akan unsur hara sesuai dengan umur, produksi, dan kesehatan tanaman. Pada kondisi pekebun yang mengalami kesulitan melakukan pemupukan akibat harga karet yang rendah maka penundaan pemupukan selama dua tahun belum memberikan efek kerugian finansial bagi pekebun.

Nitrogen is one of the nutrients needed in large quantities by plants. Plant with nitrogen deficiency will lead to stunted growth a n d d e c r e a s e d p l a n t p r o d u c t i v i t y . Implementation of the precision farming system on fertilizer activity in rubber plantation was done by determining fertilizer dose that is made based on soil and plants nutrient content. For large areas, it is costly analysis of plant nutrients. Therefore it is needed a technology that can estimate the condition of plant nutrients quickly and low cost. Remote sensing technology is an alternative that can be used for large areas and with a fast time and it is relatively low cost. The study was aimed to obtain information effect of spatial resolution images on the results of nitrogen content mapping on rubber plantation. Multi-resolution images used include GeoEye-1 (2 m), and Landsat 8 OLI (30 m). The method used was to build semi-empirical relationship between single band and image vegetation index with rubber plant nitrogen nutrient content. The results showed that map of nitrogen content estimate of rubber plant using Sentinel-2A (SE 0,369) image had higher accuracy than using GeoEye-1 (SE 0,519) and Landsat 8 OLI images (SE 0,462).
