The Effect of Nondialyzable Material (NDM) Cranberry Extract on Formation of Contact Lens Biofilm byStaphylococcus epidermidis

Abstract: NDM reduces formation of biofilm on soft contact lenses. This has important implications for the prevention of contact lens-related corneal infections caused by S. epidermidis.

“…Cranberry juice and extracts have historically been used to prevent urinary tract infections in women [ 3 – 5 ]. The extracted NDM of cranberry has been shown to prevent the formation of biofilm by S. epidermis on soft contact lenses, which could reduce ocular infections [ 43 ]. It has been shown previously that cranberry NDM contains primarily A-type PACs [ 43 ].…”

“…To date, clinical trials have documented the efficacy of cranberry in women with recurrent UTIs (Jepson and Craig, ; Stothers, ), but there is limited research regarding the activity of cranberry on biofilm formation. Previous studies have included the evaluation of cranberry extracts on biofilm produced by Staphylococcus epidermidis on contact lens (Leshem et al , ), and cranberry juice on biofilm produced by uropathogenic E. coli (Di Martino et al , ; Tao et al , ). These studies confirm that cranberry juice can lead to a decrease in the ability of pathogenic bacteria to develop biofilm on inert surfaces such as urinary catheters and contact lenses.…”
