Samples of barley having low, medium, and high protein contents were obtained from field fertilizer experiments conducted during 1957 and 1958. The nutritive values of these grains were compared in a feeding trial employing rats as the test animal, and by a semi-quantitative chromatographic estimation of 13 amino acids in the grains. For the feeding experiment all diets were supplemented with minerals and vitamins. Each grain sample was fed with and without added lysine. Animal growth and food efficiency improved with increase in protein levels and with addition of lysine. The 13 amino acids determined accounted for approximately two-thirds and four-fifths of the total protein in the 1957 and 1958 grains respectively. Possible causes of these differences are discussed. The analytical data revealed that percentages of 9 essential amino acids in barley protein were approximately double the amounts reported by other analytical procedures. Compared to previously reported data, there were some noteworthy variations for individual amino acids. There may be practical applications of the procedure used for amino acid determinations in evaluating the protein quality of feed grains. The availability of such a technique could be very helpful to plant breeders concerned with the production of feed grain varieties. The feeding experiment established the nutritive importance for rats, and presumably for swine, of grain protein increases resulting from nitrogen fertilization.

Oats (Avena saliva L.) is an important protein and mineral source for humans and animals. Few data exist that relate cultural practices to oat grain nutritional quality. A split-plot design was used to evaluate the influence of the four main treatment seeding rates (36,72, 108, and 143 kg/ha), and four split treatments of N fertilizer applications (control and 56 kg N/ha applied at planting, 4 leaf, and jointing stages) on oat grain yield and mineral concentration in oat grain. The study was conducted at two Ohio locations in 1984. The soil at Columbus was a Kokomo silty clay loam (fine, mixed, mesic type Argiaquoll) and at Springfield was an Ockley silt loam (fine, loamy, mixed, mesic type Hapludalf). There was no significant location effect on grain yield, but a significant location by seeding rate interaction was observed. Location affected grain mineral concentration for all elements except Mg. Location appeared to cause differences for all elements studied except N and K. Significant location by seeding rate interactions occurred for all elements except N, P, Mn, and Zn. Seeding rate affected the concentrations of N at both locations, but the other nutrients (P, K, Mg, Cu, Zn, and Fe) were either unaffected or affected at only one location. Nitrogen application increased grain N concentration at both locations. This effect was enhanced by delaying N application. The effects of six amounts (0, 17, 34, 51, 68, 85 kg N/ha) of fertilizer N, applied at sowing time, on the crude protein (N x 6-25) content of barley grain sown as the first, second and fourth or later tillage crop after grazed pasture were studied over three seasons at a total of 126 sites. In addition, non-protein N in the grain was measured at 24 sites.The overall crude protein content was 11-3% without N, increasing to 13-4% with 85 kg N/ha. The first increment of 17 kg N/ha gave the least increase in grain protein content. The year which gave the largest yields gave the lowest grain protein contents and vice versa. The mean grain protein contents without N for 1971-3 inclusive were 10-8, 11-5 and 11-8% respectively.The mean grain protein contents without N when barley was sown as the first, second and fourth or later tillage crop after pasture were 12-6, 11-5 and 10-0% respectively; the corresponding values with 85 kg N/ha were 14-4, 13-9 and 11-8%. There was a positive relationship between grain protein content and lodging, especially in barley sown as the first tillage crop after pasture, where lodging was most severe.Non-protein N was low and only accounted for 5-8 % of the total grain N content. The mean grain. N uptake with no fertilizer N applied was 82, 70 and 49 kg/ha in barley sown as the first, second and fourth or later tillage crop respectively. The apparent recovery of fertilizer N was largest in fourth or later barley. 16-2
