The Effect of Nitrogen Top Dressing on Yield and Protein Content of Nitrogen-Deficient Cereals

Abstract: Top dressings of ammonium nitrate were made durilg the grorving season to crops of barley and oats showing symptoms of -acute iltrogen deficiency. The addition of nitrogen in the earll' s1ag9s. -of plant.growth resulted in increased vegetative growth and increased yields., Applications of nitrogen delayed until the shot-blade stage had little efiect on.yield, but subsiantialty'increascd the protein conte'it. The yieJd.of pr-otein per acre was increised rvith higher-rates of fertiiizarion, regardless of whether… Show more

“…Samples of barley varying in protein conrenr were obrained from field fertilizerexperimenis cohdu-cted' in nofth-cenrral Alberta during the summers of 1957 and 1958 (10). For each year three sers of grain sairples, designated hereafter as lozl, medium, and' high protein, *E e prep"red.…”

“…F.ach grain sample was a composite prepared by bulking eqUal wiig.hts of barley from four-or five of th'e field'triils. Lo'* proteii salrnples riere all obtained from unfertilized plots, while medium anilhigh proteiir grain came from adjacent plots in the same fields to which ammojriuin nitradi: ferrilizer lupplying-2O,40 or 60 pounds of nitrogen per acre had been applied (10). Each of the six bulk giain samples were divided into two eqrial porfions, one of which *"s rup-plrmented with 0.9 per cent lysine.…”

“…Although times of N application used in this study differed from treatments used by Welch and Young (1980), results of the two studies were similar. McBeath and Toogood (1960) also found that delayed application of nitrogen fertilizer in oats and barley resulted in an increase in the protein concentration of the grain. Phosphorous and Potassium: Cereal grains usually contain P and K in sufficient concentration for human diets (Allaway, 1984).…”

“…This is probably due to a small but continuous release of soil N throughout the growing season from the old pasture. It has been shown that soil N released late in the growing season increases the grain protein content rather than the yields (McBeath & Toogood, 1960;Hunter, 1962).…”
