The aim of this study is to assess the in vitro shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of one and two-step fluoridated orthodontic resins under conditions that simulate high cariogenic challenge. Edgewise brackets for maxillary central incisors were randomly bonded to 80 bovine incisors, using either Transbond TM Plus Color Change orthodontic resin and a self-etching primer adhesive (G1; n = 40) or Orthodontic Fill Magic with a conventional acid-etch technique (G2; n = 40). Each group of resin (n = 10) was divided into: immediate shear (A-pre-cycling control), immersion in artificial remineralizing saliva (neutral saliva) for 14 days (B-post-cycling control) and pH cycling with high cariogenic challenge (C-acid saliva with pH 5.5 and D-acid saliva with pH 4.5). After 14 days of pH cycling, the shear bond strength and ARI were evaluated. Considering the shear bond strength, Transbond TM Plus Color Change resin was stronger than Orthodontic Fill Magic when it was submitted to high cariogenic challenge (p < 0.05). Also Transbond TM Plus Color Change resin showed better adhesion to enamel than Orthodontic Fill Magic, in all situations evaluated (p < 0.05). It could be concluded that Transbond TM Plus Color Change resin presented better shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index when submitted to high cariogenic challenge, in comparison with Orthodontic Fill Magic.

Objective: To evaluate bonding efficacy of activated Transbond Plus Self-Etching Primer (TPSEP) used at different time points with Transbond XT to bond metallic orthodontic brackets to bovine incisors. Materials and Methods: The inferior incisors of 210 bovines were randomly divided into seven groups (n ϭ 30). TPSEPs were mixed, activated, and kept activated for 30 (group 30), 21 (group 21), 15 (group 15), 7 (group 7), 3 (group 3), or 1 (group 1) days before bonding, and in one group (group 0) TPSEP was used immediately after mixed. At day zero, incisors in each group were bonded in exactly the same way. After applying TPSEP, brackets were bonded with Transbond XT, according to the manufacturer's instructions. After 24 hours, shear bond strength (SBS) tests were performed for all samples at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min, and the Adhesive Remnant Index was scored. Results: There were no significant differences between the SBS of groups 0, 1, 3, 7, and 15 (P Ͼ .05) However, those groups had higher SBS (P Ͻ .05) compared with groups 21 and 30. No significant difference (P Ͼ .05) was observed between groups 21 and 30. Despite the decrease in SBS for groups 21 and 30, bond strength values were still satisfactory. Conclusion: After activation, the TPSEP mix can be stored for a period of 15 days without losing its adhesive properties. (Angle Orthod. 2009;79:133-137.)

Objective: To determine if a new premixed self-etch adhesive can be used to successfully bond orthodontic brackets to enamel. Materials and Methods: Forty human molars were cleaned, mounted, and randomly divided into two groups. In group 1, 20 teeth were conditioned using the self-etching primer Transbond Plus (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif). In group 2, 20 teeth were conditioned using a new premixed selfetching adhesive, AdheSE One (Ivoclar Vivadent Inc, Amherst, NY). Both groups were bonded using brackets precoated with a composite adhesive. The teeth were debonded within half an hour following initial bonding using a universal testing machine. After debonding, the enamel surface was examined under 10ϫ magnifications to determine the amount of residual adhesive remaining on the tooth. A Student's t-test was used to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of the two groups, and the Chi-square test was used to compare the adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores for the two adhesive systems. Results:The mean SBS of the brackets bonded to the teeth using AdhesSE One was 3.6 Ϯ 1.3 MPa and was significantly lower (t ϭ 2.80, P ϭ .01) than the SBS of the brackets bonded using Transbond Plus (x ϭ 5.9 Ϯ 3.2 MPa). The comparisons of the ARI scores between the two groups ( 2 ϭ 19.26) indicated that bracket failure mode was also significantly different (P Ͻ .001), with more adhesive remaining on the teeth bonded using Transbond Plus. Conclusions: The SBS of the new premixed self-etching adhesive needs to be increased for it to be successfully used for bonding orthodontic brackets.
