The main objective of this study was to shed light on the previously unknown arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) communities in Southern Arabia. We explored AMF communities in two date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) plantations and the natural vegetation of their surrounding arid habitats. The plantations were managed traditionally in an oasis and according to conventional guidelines at an experimental station. Based on spore morphotyping, the AMF communities under the date palms appeared to be quite diverse at both plantations and more similar to each other than to the communities under the ruderal plant, Polygala erioptera, growing at the experimental station on the dry strip between the palm trees, and to the communities uncovered under the native vegetation (Zygophyllum hamiense, Salvadora persica, Prosopis cineraria, inter-plant area) of adjacent undisturbed arid habitat. AMF spore abundance and species richness were higher under date palms than under the ruderal and native plants. Sampling in a remote sand dune area under Heliotropium kotschyi yielded only two AMF morphospecies and only after trap culturing. Overall, 25 AMF morphospecies were detected encompassing all study habitats. Eighteen belonged to the genus Glomus including four undescribed species. Glomus sinuosum, a species typically found in undisturbed habitats, was the most frequently occurring morphospecies under the date palms. Using molecular tools, it was also found as a phylogenetic taxon associated with date palm roots. These roots were associated with nine phylogenetic taxa, among them eight from Glomus group A, but the majority could not be assigned to known morphospecies or to environmental sequences in public databases. Some phylogenetic taxa seemed to be site specific. Despite the use of group-specific primers and efficient trapping systems with a bait plant consortium, surprisingly, two of the globally most frequently found species, Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae, were not detected neither as phylogenetic taxa in the date palm roots nor as spores under the date palms, the intermediate ruderal plant, or the surrounding natural vegetation. The results highlight the uniqueness of AMF communities inhabiting these diverse habitats exposed to the harsh climatic conditions of Southern Arabia.

As plantas cítricas são, geralmente, dependentes dos fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA). Há relatos indicando a existência de um intercâmbio hormonal entre as plantas e os FMA e também a comprovação de que a simbiose planta-FMA é beneficiada pela aplicação radicular de auxinas. Com o objetivo de verificar se esta interação também ocorre com outros grupos de fitorreguladores, submergiu-se, por 10 segundos, o sistema radicular de plântulas de citrange Carrizo (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osb. X Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.), previamente inoculadas, ou não, com Glomus intraradices Schenck & Smith, em uma solução de 10ppm de ácido giberélico (AG3). Após sete meses de cultivo em casa de vegetação, verificou-se que os FMA incrementaram o desenvolvimento vegetativo do citrange Carrizo, além de provocarem um aumento nos níveis foliares de P, Zn e Cu e induzirem a um decréscimo no conteúdo de Ca, Mg, Fe e Mn nos tecidos. Os FMA não afetaram os níveis foliares de N e K. O AG3 somente aumentou o diâmetro do colo das plantas, não modificando sua altura, peso seco da parte aérea e raízes, número de folhas e superfície foliar. O AG3 incrementou os níveis de P e Fe nos tecidos foliares, reduziu os teores de K e não modificou os teores dos demais nutrientes. O AG3 não alterou a colonização radicular com FMA. No entanto, verificou-se uma interação positiva e significativa entre os FMA e o AG3 sobre o desenvolvimento vegetativo das plantas de citrange Carrizo, indicando que o AG3 favorece a simbiose, permitindo uma redução no período de produção da muda.

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) is a significant and developing crop especially in the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East and North Africa regions. The area under cultivation of this tree is increasing annually. Date palms usually grown under harsh and unfavorable growing conditions with low rainfall and high rates of evaporation as well as in soils with low organic matter and nutrient deficiencies. Hence, date palm cultivation becomes dependent on application of high levels of fertilizers as well as on irrigation. This may lead to salinization of soil and leaching of nutrients to deep soils that might affect ground water. Therefore, it is important that date palm plantations are managed in a sustainable way to reduce the impact of date palm cultivation on ecosystems while maximizing dates yield through using such practices as mycorrhizal fungi technology. The application of mycorrhizal fungi technology is an option that can benefit both agronomic plant health and ecosystems. Mycorrhizae confer numerous benefits to host plants including improved plant growth and mineral nutrition, water uptake, tolerance to diseases and stresses such as drought, temperature fluctuation, metal toxicity and salinity. Mycorrhizae may also play a role in the formation of stable soil aggregates, building up a macro porous structure of soil that allows penetration of water and air and prevents erosion. All of these beneficial effects on plant health and soil fitness mean that mycorrhizae have the potential to increase agricultural productivity and are crucial for the sustainable functioning of agricultural ecosystems. This study provides an insight into the application of mycorrhizae in date palm cultivation.
