The Effect of Lumbar Strengthening Exercise on Pain and the Cross-sectional Area Change of Lumbar Muscles

Abstract: Abstract. [Purpose] This study attempts to investigated the effect of a lumbar strengthening ball exercise on the pain of patients who have chronic lower back pain and the cross-sectional area changes in their lumbar muscles. [Subjects] The research subjects were of 33 patients with chronic lower back pain who were divided into two groups: a ball exercise therapy group (BETG, n = 17) and a conservative physical therapy group (CPTG, n = 16).[Methods] A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the recov… Show more

“…Therefore, muscular flexibility and balanced growth of muscular strength are the fundamental elements for of building a correct posture 9 ) . It is necessary to increase muscular strength and muscular endurance of the lumbar region including the abdominal muscular strength and back muscular strength to help maintain correct postures, and this will reduce the dynamic loads on the vertebra and tissues around the spine 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ) .…”

“…Physiotherapy has been reported to be effective in relieving LBP and involves a multidisciplinary approach aimed at regaining function and preventing disability 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ) . Physiotherapy regimes for management of LBP are varied and include McKenzie lumbar spine exercises, intensive strengthening, manipulation, device-based therapies, and low intensity aerobics 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ) . Device based therapy for LBP involves quantitative assessment of muscle strength, resistance and lumbar motion and tailoring the rehabilitation protocol based on this objective assessment.…”

“…In addition to the abdominal muscle exercise, lumbar muscle exercise for patients with LBP has the effect of reducing the pressure of the disc and reliving the tense of the lumbar nerve root [14]. In addition, hip strengthening exercise has been reported to be effective in reducing pain [15].…”
