The Effect of Low Calcium Diet on Bone in Ovariectomized Mice.

Abstract: Abstract. This study investigates the effects of Ca on bone in the ovariectomized mice. Twenty-six female ICR mice aged 5 weeks were used. They were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated (SHAM) and fed standard mouse diet (SF) or special low calcium diet (L.Ca), respectively. All animals were sacrificed at day 100 after operation. Mechanical strength of the left femur and tibia was measured by the three-point bending strength test. The bones were dried, weighed and burned to ash. Correlation between mechanical… Show more

“…In our work, such a low-calcium diet was provided to speed up the osteopenic process, resulting in an approximately 6-week reduction to achieve an osteoporotic condition compared to the model with normal diet. 61,62 Bone volume, trabecular thickness and number were also in accordance with previous studies, 49,63 highlighting the successful establishment of an osteoporotic bone condition.…”

“…In animals, low Ca intake induces bone loss and the reduction of bone formation rate [5][6][7] . The ovariectomized (OVX) animal is well known for osteoporotic model, and widely used 8)9) .…”

“…Finally, a comment has to be made regarding the experimental conditions of the current study. Some authors noticed that a high calcium diet may reverse the condition of osteopenia in ovariectomized animals [ 49 ]. In our model, OVX rats were fed a standard diet with a considerable amount of calcium.…”
