The effect of land use changes to discharge extremities in Cimahi Watershed – Upper Citarum Watershed, West Java

Abstract: The development of cities and regencies in the Cimahi watershed area increases the rate of population growth which results in high land requirements in the Cimahi watershed area. Land se change affects the flow of runoff and debit of the Cimahi River. The purpose of this research is to assess the hydrological function area in the Cimahi watershed, the impact of the land use change and to analyze the effect of landuse change in the Cimahi watershed on the extremity of water resources in terms of both quantity a… Show more

“…Shifts in local rainfall patterns between sub-watersheds make it difficult to disentangle the relative importance of land use and climate change through statistical pattern analysis without knowledge of the underlying processes [98,99]. The holy grail of scientific hydrology, connecting overall aggregated flow patterns to local extreme events and possible hysteresis, is still worth searching for even if a general solution might ultimately prove impossible to find [100].…”

“…Population growth in Cimahi City causes land use changes. Land that was originally green or unused is then used for the purposes of the domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors [4]. These three sectors are the main activities carried out in the Cimahi sub-watershed which have the potential to be the main source of river pollution.…”

“…Other problem is the increase in population. It is one of the factors that causes land use changes in the Citarum watershed especially in the case of Cimahi sub-watershed [4].…”

“…The lack of an adequate sewage treatment system for domestic wastewater causes heavy flows of nitrogen, PO 4 , and chemical oxygen demand (COD) into the Citarum River [19]. In addition, the increased settlement in the upper Citarum Watershed has had an effect on the dissolved oxygen (DO) decline [20].…”
