SummaryHerbivore attack elicits changes in cytokinins (CKs), but how these changes influence defense signaling remains poorly described. We investigated the influence of the CK pathway on the well-described inducible defense pathways of Nicotiana attenuata in response to wounding with and without elicitors from the specialist herbivore Manduca sexta.CK pathway manipulation often suffers from substantial side effects on plant growth and development. We therefore used multiple manipulation tools including spray application of CKs, chemically-inducible expression of the CK biosynthesis enzyme isopentenyltransferase, and transient and constitutive RNAi-mediated gene silencing of CK receptors to resolve the function of CKs in plant defense.The results demonstrated that CK concentrations in leaves and perception through CHASE-DOMAIN CONTAINING HIS KINASE 2 (NaCHK2) and NaCHK3 were important for the accumulation of jasmonic acid (JA) and phenolamides and proteinase inhibitor activity. By contrast, the CK pathway did not promote the accumulation of the active JA-isoleucine conjugate and negatively regulated the release of specific green leaf volatile esters. Interestingly, CK signaling also promotes the systemic phenolamide accumulation.We conclude that the CK pathway is an important regulator of herbivory-inducible defense signaling and chemistry, which expands its reported participation in adjusting a plant's physiology to abiotic and biotic stress responses.

Under environmental stresses, plant development is adaptively modulated. This modulation is influenced by the steady-state balance (homeostasis) between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phytohormones. Frequently observed symptoms in plant stress adaptation responses include growth retardation, reduced metabolism and photosynthesis, reallocation of metabolic resources and increased antioxidant activities to maximize plant survival under adverse environmental conditions. In view of stressinduced morphogenetic changes during adaptation, ROS and auxin are the main players in the regulatory networks because both are strongly affected by exposure to environmental cues. However, the mechanisms underlying the crosstalk between ROS and auxin are poorly understood. In this review, we aim at surveying how the integration of environmental stress-related signals is modulated by crosstalk between ROS and auxin regulatory networks.

Popularisation of historical rose cultivars is important for overall increase of biodiversity within currently available assortment, however their vegetative propagation is rather difficult. Possible scenario behind it is that commonly used one-bud leafy cuttings have limited storage capacity due to the small size of the stem. We hypothesised that the treatment of cuttings this rose with rooting preparations would positively affect on the condition of their leaves. We tested the effect of preparations based on seaweed extracts (Bio Rhizotonic, Root Juice, Bio Roots) as well as commonly used root stimulants (Ukorzeniacz A aqua and Ukorzeniacz B aqua containing 0,4% IBA or 0,2% NAA respectively) on the viability potential of the Rosa 'Duchesse d'Angoulême' cuttings. We have monitored the senescence process in leaves by the total soluble protein, chlorophyll and carotenoid content measurements. In order to test the potential effect of the mother plant and timing of shoots acquirement cuttings for the experiment were taken from mother plants at four different maturity stages (flower buds closed; all flowers open; just after petal fall and 7-14 days after petal fall). As expected the amount of the measured components in mother plants varied in individual phases of shoot maturity. This feature influenced the positive effect of rooting stimulants on cuttings viability. The most striking effects were in rooted cuttings derived from shoots collected just after flower petal fall. Observed increase in soluble protein and chlorophyll content did not correlate however with the percentage of obtained rooted cuttings. Based on that we can speculate that the biological basis of observed positive effect of natural rooting preparations on the 'Duchesse d'Angoulême' rose is complex and does not rely on the delay or inhibition of senescence process.
