The Effect of Iso‐butanol‐diesel Blends on Engine Performance

Abstract: abstract. The effect of iso-butanol addition to diesel fuel on engine performance parameters has been experimentally investigated. The used engine was a single cylinder four stroke CI engine Type Lister 1-8. The tests were performed at engine speed that ranges from 375 to 625 with an increment of 42 rpm at different loads and with 10, 20, 30 and 40% v/v iso-butanol-diesel fuel blends. The overall engine performance parameters measured included air-fuel ratio (AFR), exhaust gas temperature, brake power (B p ), … Show more

“…A physical mechanism of NO x and CO formation in the engine cylinder is di erent (Kruggel 1989;Звонов 1981). erefore, in most cases, the conversion of the diesel engine to work using di erent types of fuel is related to contrary changes in CO and NO x emissions (Lebedevas et al 2006b;Chen et al 2008;Al-Hasan and Al-Momany 2008;He et al 2003). Similar results are obtained in the current tests.…”

“…However, there are few studies on combustion characteristics and emissions of four butanol isomers on diesel engines. Some previous studies have investigated the engine performance and emissions by fueling iso-butanol/diesel blends on diesel engines [59,60]. In addition, the comparison studies on different butanol isomers have also been carried out, such as n-butanol/diesel and iso-butanol/diesel [61], n-butanol/ diesel, sec-butanol/diesel and iso-butanol/diesel [62].…”

“…Introducing the oxygenated compounds such as rapeseed methyl ester and ethanol into diesel fuel is presently the best way to achieve the required results in case of pollution (see Table 1). Th us, as far as the exploitation of diesel engines fuelled with D/RME blends is well-known, the factfi ndings of the infl uence of ethanol additives on engine characteristics presented in the scientifi c papers are still discussed by many researchers (Shi et al 2005 andPągowski 2003;Lebedevas et al 2006Lebedevas et al , 2007Lebedevas et al and 2009Pikūnas et al 2006;Labeckas 2005;Hansen et al 2001;Raslavičius 2009;Raslavičius and Markšaitis 2007;Mittelbach and Remschmidt 2004;Kwanchareon et al 2007;Bazaras and Raslavičius 2008;Török 2009;Al-Hasan and Al-Momany 2008). Th ese facts have encouraged initiating research on the characteristics of the diesel engine fuelling it with blends consisting of mineral diesel and bio-based fuel additives.…”
