RESUMO O processo de urbanização tende a retirar espaços destinados à existência de vegetação, e isso provoca alterações em fatores ambientais como, por exemplo, elevação da temperatura e redução da umidade relativa do ar. O objetivo dessa pesquisa, foi discutir o avanço da urbanização e a ocorrência de vegetação nessas áreas, como mitigadoras da temperatura, estabilizadora da umidade relativa do ar, e velocidade dos ventos. O método utilizado foi o dedutivo, com natureza observativa e abrangência qualitativa. Complementou-se esse método com o levantamento de dados documentais, cujo recorte temporal situado entre 2008 a 2018 e estudos pioneiros nos sites abertos Scientific Library Online-SciELO; Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento do Ensino Superior-CAPES; Google Scholar; Web Science. Os dados obtidos e analisados indicaram que o processo de urbanização provoca a supressão arbórea, e isso provoca tendências de elevação na temperatura do ar, além do revestimento concretício, asfáltico, e a criação de ilhas de calor. Indicaram também que há uma nova forma de promover a arborização urbana: a verticalização, seja a partir das denominadas paredes verdes, paredes verdes vivas, jardins verdes, fachadas verdes, em sistemas modulares ou não, e que elas são mitigadoras das temperaturas elevadas porque promovem absorção da radiação incidente disponível, incrementam a umidade relativa do ar, por retenção de água para a fotossíntese, podem crescer ou dispersar de acordo com a velocidade dos ventos. Então, o uso de paredes verdes em áreas urbanas deve ser utilizado com mais frequência nas comunidades onde o crescimento urbano promove supressão vegetal com maior intensidade.
