Objective Postoperative nausea and vomiting is one of the most common side effects after anesthesia in surgeries, such as cesarean section. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ginger and metoclopramide in the prevention of nausea and vomiting during and after cesarean section. Methods This clinical trial was conducted on 180 patients aged 18-40 years who underwent cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. The first group received 10 mg of metoclopramide via intravenous injection (metoclopramide group), and the second group received 1 g of oral ginger (ginger group) half an hour before spinal anesthesia. The frequency and severity of nausea and vomiting during surgery and at 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours postoperatively were compared in both groups. To analyze the results, the t-test, chi-square test, and Mann-Whitney test were used. Results There was no significant difference in the frequency of nausea and vomiting between the 2 groups during operation, 2 hours and 6 hours after surgery (P=0.182, 0.444 and 0.563 respectively). The severity of nausea and vomiting was also similar in the 2 groups (P=0.487 and 0.652 respectively); however, the metoclopramide group had a lower systolic blood pressure (P<0.001; df=2.176; f=18.66) and mean arterial pressure (P<0.001; df=2.176; f=6.36) than the ginger group. Conclusion The results revealed that ginger reduced nausea and vomiting to the same extent as metoclopramide in patients undergoing cesarean section.

Background The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of general anesthesia in cesarean section on the umbilical cord blood gas values and intraoperative hemodynamics of parturient women. Material/Methods A total of 112 parturient women who received cesarean section were eventually randomized into 2 groups, GA (general anesthesia) group (n=56), and SE (combined spinal and epidural anesthesia) group (n=56). The umbilical cord blood gas values, postpartum Apgar score, intraoperative blood loss, mean arterial pressure, heart rate, total operative time, time intervals from anesthesia to delivery and from skin incision to delivery, the incidences of adverse reactions and neonatal asphyxia, and the postoperative patient satisfaction were compared between the 2 groups. Results There were no significant differences between the 2 groups in total operative time, Apgar score, neonatal asphyxia rate, umbilical arterial and venous cord blood gas values, intraoperative blood loss, and time interval from skin incision to delivery (all P >0.05). The GA group was significantly shorter in the time interval from anesthesia to delivery than the SE group ( P <0.05). The incidences of nausea, vomiting, and chills in the GA group were significantly lower than those in the SE group (all P <0.05). The GA group was significantly higher in postoperative patient satisfaction than the SE group ( P <0.05). Conclusions General anesthesia has little impact on the umbilical cord blood gas values and Apgar score, and ensures better hemodynamic stability in cesarean section. Moreover, general anesthesia is characterized by rapid induction and is therefore valuable for use in clinical procedures.

PurposeNausea and vomiting are common, undesirable symptoms during cesarean section. We conducted this study to assess the antiemetic properties of propofol for the prevention and immediate treatment of post-delivery nausea and vomiting during cesarean section under combined spinal–epidural anesthesia.MethodsEighty women undergoing elective cesarean delivery under combined spinal–epidural anesthesia were randomized to receive either propofol at a plasma concentration of 1000 ng/mL or normal saline immediately after clamping of the umbilical cord. The incidence of post-delivery nausea and vomiting, patients requiring rescue antiemetic, bispectral index, sedation score, and the incidence of hypotension were assessed intraoperatively. Satisfaction and neonatal behavioral neurological assessments were evaluated postoperatively.ResultsThe incidence of nausea was significantly lower in the propofol group compared to the placebo group (25% versus 60%, P < 0.001). The incidence of retching and vomiting showed no significant difference between the two groups. Propofol 20 mg as a rescue antiemetic was significantly effective in both the groups. Satisfaction level of patients and obstetricians in the propofol group was higher than in the placebo group. There was no statistical difference in the incidence of hypotension between the two groups both pre- and post-delivery. There was no difference in postoperative neonatal behavioral neurological assessment between groups.ConclusionPropofol at a plasma concentration of 1000 ng/mL significantly reduced the incidence of post-delivery nausea compared to placebo, but had no effect on reducing retching or vomiting episodes during cesarean section.
