Objective: To test the null hypothesis that adding Listerine mouthrinse to the standard oral hygiene regimen has no added benefit for orthodontic patients in maintaining proper oral health. Materials and Methods: Patients within their first 6 months of orthodontic treatment were assigned either to the brushing ϩ flossing (N ϭ 25) or brushing ϩ flossing ϩ Listerine (N ϭ 25) group. Initially, all of the participants received a prophylaxis and instructions on how to brush and floss. Measurements were recorded for the bleeding, gingival, and plaque indices (BI, MGI, and PI, respectively) that provided baseline values (T1). Subsequent measurements were taken at 3 months (T2) and 6 months (T3). Mean BI, MGI, and PI at T1, T2, and T3 were compared statistically between the groups using repeated measures analysis of variance. The significance level was set at P Յ .05. Results: The response profiles for the BI, MGI, and PI over time were significantly different between the two groups. Patients who had Listerine in their daily oral hygiene regimen exhibited significantly lower scores for all three indices at T2 and T3 than the patients who only brushed and flossed. Conclusions: The hypothesis is rejected. This study shows that use of Listerine mouthrinse can reduce the amount of plaque and gingivitis in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Adding Listerine to the standard oral hygiene regimen may be beneficial for orthodontic patients in maintaining proper oral health, thus reducing the likelihood that white spot lesions and gingivitis will develop.

The present study assessed the effect of ozonized olive oil gel during orthodontic treatment to inhibit demineralization around orthodontic brackets.Material and Methods: Material and Methods: Material and Methods: Material and Methods: Fourteen patient, aged 15-18 years, scheduled to have premolars extraction as a part of orthodontic treatment participated in the present study. The patients were randomly divided into 3 groups; control group (16 upper and lower premolars) and two experimental groups (20 upper and lower premolars for each). In the Control group no treatment was applied on the premolars. In experimental groups, after etching and bonding, T-loops were formed with 0.014 inch stainless steel wire and engaged on the experimental teeth. In experimental group II, ozonized olive oil gel was applied sparingly to the tooth surface with concentration of 20:25 µgm/ml. Participants were instructed to apply the ozonized olive oil gel to the buccal surface of the premolars three times daily for 8 weeks after regular oral hygiene procedures. After 8 weeks, the brackets were deboned and the premolars extracted carefully. The premolars of each group were divided into 2 equal numbers; 28 premolars prepared for elemental analyses (calcium and phosphorus) followed by scanning electron microscope investigation, and 28 premolars examined with polarized light. ANOVA test was applied followed by post hoc LSD test to compare between each 2 groups.

This review examines some of the potential risks of orthodontic therapy along with their evidence base. The risks of orthodontic treatment include periodontal damage, pain, root resorption, tooth devitalization, temporomandibular disorder, caries, speech problems and enamel damage. These risks can be understood to arise from a synergy between treatment and patient factors. In general terms, treatment factors that can influence risk include appliance type, force vectors and duration of treatment whilst relevant patient factors are both biological and behavioural. Hence, the natural variation between orthodontic treatment plans and patients gives rise to variations in risk. A good understanding of these risks is required for clinicians to obtain informed consent before starting treatment as well as to reduce the potential for harm during treatment. After considering each of these risks, a conceptual framework is presented to help clinicians better understand how orthodontic risks arise and may therefore be mitigated.
