The Effect of Electrocautery around the Patellar Rim in Patellar Non-Resurfacing Total Knee Arthroplasty

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of electrocautery on the reduction of pain in patellar non-resurfacing bilateral total knee arthroplasty.Materials and MethodsA total of 50 patients were enrolled into this study; all patients had undergone bilateral patellar non-resurfacing total knee arthoplasty at our hospital, between January 2007 to December 2008. The minimum follow-up period was 1 year. The electrocautery of the patellar rim was performed randomly on one side only. The … Show more

“…4,11,12 The results of this study demonstrate that the group that underwent PD showed significantly better results for the postoperative knee functional scores. Because no significant differences occurred for gender and BMI between groups, we assumed that these variables did not interfere substantially in the analysis of the results, a fact corroborated by the lack of correlation of the variables used to determine knee function and pain.…”

“…A large number of patients could increase the reliability of meta-analysis. Secondly, the risk factors were inconsistent in above RCTs [1,4,[19][20][21]28]. For example, female gender, ages, days of follow-up and depth of circumpatellar electrocautery were considered as risk factors.…”

“…Similarly, all studies reported outcomes they planed previously, suggesting a low risk of bias. Five studies reported that they did not receive any commercial funding or grants in support of their research [1,[19][20][21]28], whereas one study received financial grants from commercial supports [4]. No other apparent bias was found among the included studies.…”

“…Previous studies have compared the outcomes of denervation and no denervation patellae in patients following primary TKA [7]. Although some studies have revealed that patellar denervation (PD) may decrease the incidence of anterior knee pain [2,8,9], others have indicated that patellar denervation had no substantial effect during follow-up [3,10,11,12,13].…”
