The Effect of Curcumin (Active Substance of Turmeric)on the Acetic Acid-Induced Visceral Nociception in Rats

Abstract: In the present study, the effect of chronic oral administration of curcumin in the presence or absence of morphine and noloxone was investigated on the visceral nociception induced by acetic acid in rats. Intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid (1 mL, 2%) produced contractions in the abdominal musculature (writhes). The latency time to the beginning of the first writhe was measured and the total number of writhes in the 1 h after acetic acid injection was counted. The latency time to the beginning of the firs… Show more

“…They were kept under a 12/12 hour light/dark cycle 27 with the room temperature of 28 0 C ±5 0 C (which was corresponded to the thermo-neutral zone of rats 28 ) at the Pain laboratory of the Department of Physiology, BSMMU. The animals were there for consecutive active due to any ongoing damage of the tissue or organism 3 .…”

“…All the rats were kept in the Pain laboratory of the Department of Physiology, BSMMU, where they were housed in specially built plastic cages with 6 rats per cage under a 12/12 hour light/dark cycle [29][30][31] . The ambient room temperature was maintained at around 27 to 28°C, corresponding to the thermo-neutral zone for rodents 32,33 .…”

“…Curcumin isolated from Curcuma longa has shown to be nontoxic and non-mutagenic and exhibits a wide spectrum of biological activities which include neuroprotective, antiinflammatory, antidepressant, and antioxidant activity (Fan et al, 2013;Gupta et al, 2013). Curcumin has also been reported to exert antinociceptive effects in different animal models of pain (Mittal et al, 2009;Tajik et al, 2008), which also includes diabetic neuropathic pain (Sharma et al, 2006). With the above background, the present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of curcuminin vincristine-induced neuropathic pain in a mice model.…”
