The effect of copper ions on optical properties of silver-halide photochromic glasses

Abstract: The study of the photochromic process in an alkali‐alumino‐boro‐silicate glass with relatively high content of copper is performed. The optical absorption and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of Cu2+ ions, before and after darkening, are analysed. To understand the results the presence of an intermediate copper rich phase between the silver halide phase and the glass matrix has to be considered.

“…Silver halides AgX (X=Cl, Br, I) are widely used in photography, photochromic glasses and catalysis due to their unique semi‐conductivity and inherent photosensitivity, which have been extensively investigated . Recently, organic‐inorganic haloargentate hybrids have attracted much attention and exhibited excellent flexibility and synergistic effect in the aspects of composition, structure and performance …”
