The Effect of Combined Treatment with Oral Clindamycin and Oral Rifampicin in Patients with Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Abstract: Background: A previous limited study showed promising results of combined oral treatment with rifampicin 600 mg and clindamycin 600 mg for 10 weeks. Objective: To expand and to validate the basis for this therapy, we reviewed the response to different treatment durations. Method: A retrospective study in 34 patients. Results: Twenty-eight of 34 patients (82%) experienced at least partial improvement, and 16 (47%) showed a total remission. The maximum effect of treatment appeared within 10 weeks. Following tota… Show more

“…The combination of clindamycin (300 mg bid) and rifampicin (600 mg daily given either as 1 or 2 doses) for 10 weeks has been proved beneficial in more widely spread Hurley stage I or mild stage II disease [55][56][57] . Significantly lower results are reported with acitretin, cyclosporin A, oral dapsone, oral isotretinoin [58][59][60] . Moreover, the European Medicine Agency has recently accepted HS as an indication of a monoclonal anti-TNF-α antibody such as adalimumab [61][62][63] .…”

“…However, since in these studies different doses and different outcome variables were used to assess efficacy (Table 3), it is difficult to compare or group these studies. In three retrospective studies, 164 patients were treated of whom 88 patients completed a 10-week course of clindamycin 300 mg twice daily, and rifampicin 600 mg once daily or 300 mg twice daily [46][47][48]. Twentyone patients could not complete the treatment period because of side effects, mostly diarrhea and nausea.…”

“…formájában javasoltak. Három retrospektív (n=116) és egy prospektív (n=23) klinikai vizsgálat során clindamycin és rifampicin kombinációjával a betegek 80-85%-ánál észleltek klinikai választ (33)(34)(35)(36). A kezelések során jelentkező leggyakoribb mellékhatás (13-22%) gasztrointesztinális jellegű volt.…”
