“…2 However, the diagnostic and pharmaceutical potential of antibodies is limited because these high molecular weight proteins [immunoglobulin G (IgG), 150 kDa] do not cross either capillary or cellular barriers. 3,4 Even trunctated forms of antibodies, such as antigen binding fragments (Fab, 50 kDa) or even sFv fragments (27 kDa), are too large to easily penetrate physiological membranes.…”

“…Early experimentation using a murine model demonstrated the efficacy of goat-derived colchicine specific Fab fragments (15). Earlier work by this same group using rabbit-derived antibodies showed effective sequestration of colchicine and reduced animal mortality using this therapy (16). Baud and others reported a successful outcome in a 25-year-old woman who was given 480 mg of colchicine-specific Fab fragments 40 h after ingestion of 60 mg of colchicine, but it is not available for nonexperimental use (17).…”

“…The amount of colchicine did not have any observable effect on rabbit health, despite one rabbit consuming 43.9% of the LD 50 reported in this species (Scherrmann et al, 1989). However, the LD 50 was calculated for an intravenous injection of colchicine.…”

“…This liquid chromatography based method showed an average concentration of 0.02% of colchicine in dried leaves. Then, the distributed dose of colchicine, depending on the proportion of MeS in the distributed hay, was compared to the median lethal dose (LD 50 ) reported at 2.75 mg/kg of live weight (Scherrmann et al, 1989).…”
