The Effect of Clay Shale Drying on the Reduction of Compressive Strength and Durability in Bawen Sub-District, Semarang Regency

Abstract: Clay shale has unstable properties even though it is on a slope having a gentle slope. This raises many geotechnical problems. This study aims to determine the effect of clay shale drying on compressive strength and durability reduction by using samples taken from Kandangan Village, Polisiri Village, Bawen Sub District, Semarang Regency and Central Java. The drying process simulates when the open cut excavation process is exposed to sunlight, such as road excavations and bored pile excavations. The method used… Show more

“…According to laboratory test, the residual strength of clayshale on this location decreased to 8.3 kPa for saturated cohesion and 4.6 degree for saturated internal friction of angle (Alatas, Kamaruddin, Nazir, & Irsyam, 2015). According ro Pardoyo, et al (2020), Semarang Bawen clayshale strength is decreased to 59% for UCS value and 36 % for modulus elasticity parameter (E50) after 90 minutes drying process. Clay-shale instability may be caused by the texture and structure of the sediment and the mineral structure.…”

“…Although some methods have been established in the durability of soil elements, it is necessary to carry out studies to recognize other effects [8]. Degradation is independent of other effects like drying that affect surface [9]. Once the blocks are in their final state with or without any additive or stabilizing component [10], the development of a biofilm can be quantified through direct observation of its thickness, which is practically impossible or expensive.…”
