The effect of cetane number and oxygen content in the performance and emissions characteristics of a diesel engine using biodiesel blends

Abstract: The growth in demand for power generation and energy from alternative fuels at low cost and friendly to the natural environment is increasing. This study used waste plastic pyrolysis oil (WPPO) and ethanol to apply direct blending of conventional diesel, WPPO and ethanol with 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate (EHN). The purpose was to improve the combustion and performance characteristics of the WPPO blends. The EHN has the potential to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbon, oxides of ni… Show more

“…Biodiesel fuels have a variety of feedstocks such as used vegetable oil, waste plastics, waste biomass, animal fats (tallow) and recently microalgae, all which can be processed into biodiesel [40]. Biodiesel has the ability to be utilized as a fuel with or without engine modification which gives it high technical advantage [41,42].…”

“…Among the leading problems associated with viscosity of fuel, include: Inefficient mixing of fuel which results into incomplete combustion [463]. Early injection due to the high line of pressure thus moving the start of combustion (SOC) closer to the top dead centre (TDC).…”

“…57 Pode se observar que o número de cetano pertencente ao biodiesel de lupino é maior que o diesel mineral e só é superado pelo biodiesel obtido a partir de sebo bovino, com esta vantagem melhora-se a ignição em ambientes frios e aumenta-se a durabilidade do motor. 75 O poder calorífico do biodiesel de lupino é baixo considerando os outros valores, este indicador representa a energia em forma de calor emitida durante a combustão, no entanto, esta propriedade não possui um valor mínimo padrão.…”
