The Effect of Avocado to the Profile of Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine in Rats (Rattus norvegicus) Induced with Meloxicam

Abstract: Incidence of drug overdose during treatment of acute disease consequently leads to serious renal damage. As supporting treatment, administration of herbal medicine and food dietary are frequently developed. This research aimed to prove how the administration of avocado juice could lower the BUN and creatinine level in white rats induced with toxic doses of meloxicam. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug (NSAID), which is effectively used as an anti-inflamatory, analgesic, and antipyretic. Twenty … Show more

“…Addition of avocado decreased creatinine serum concentration showing a superior effect of diet I to diet II as diet I almost normalized creatinine concentration compared to control group. In line with our results, Anshar et al (2018) demonstrated that avocado juice decreases level of blood urea nitrogen and creatinine in white rats exposed to toxic doses of meloxicam [18]. It was observed that mice fed diet I regained weight in contrast to mice fed diet II in which weight reduction continues after adenine administration.…”

“…Avocado byproducts (seeds and peels) are a good source of phenolic compounds that can inhibit lipid and protein oxidation [ 53 ]. Avocado flavonoids could prevent the formation of renal calculi by suppressing the release of ROS, thereby protecting renal cells from oxidative stress damage [ 54 ]. Avocado has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic, and antidiabetic effects [ 55 ].…”

“…These findings go parallel with the study of Mahadeva et al [38] who reported that avocado fruit acts as a nephroprotective agent. An avocado oil-rich diet has been shown to modify renal functions [39]. The data of the present study revealed that in MSG-exposed mother rats and their offspring the levels of serum sodium ions appeared significantly higher while the level of potassium ions appeared significantly lowered if compared with the control.…”
