The Effect of Agricultural Development on the Grasshopper Populations of the Red River Valley of Manitoba, Canada

Abstract: The Red River Valley was originally a wet prairie and marsh. Drainage commenced in 1899 and was basically complete by 1907. Intensive grain farming developed. The area was periodically invaded by the Rocky Mountain grasshopper, Melanoplus spretus (Walsh), for over 100 years, until 1902, at which time this species apparently became extinct. Local grasshoppers did not become pests until about 1900, after agriculture was well established. The clear-winged grasshopper, Camnula pellucida (Scudder), and the two-stri… Show more

“…While our studies in southwestern Manitoba dealt primarily with the effects of agricultural development, climatic conditions, and the associated vegetational changes on the ecology of M. sanguinipes, data on M. bivittatus and C. pellucida were also obtained. The present paper amplifies the information reported on the latter two species for Arnaud, Manitoba (Bird and Romanow 1966). These studies support Uvarov (1962), who postulated that practically every modification of arid lands has resulted in grasshopper increases.…”

“…Since 1790 there are records of periodic invasions of southern Manitoba by the Rocky Mountain grasshopper, Melanoplus spretw (Walsh) (Mitchener 1953). This species was last collected in 1W2 (Brooks 1958) and because of ecological changes is now believed to be extinct (Gurney and Brooks 1959;Bird and Romanow 1966). In 1902, less than 10 years after settlement, local species increased to economically important numbers.…”

“…At Arnaud, Manitoba (Bird and Romanow 1966), arid conditions were created by draining marshes. Ditch banks that resulted from the installation of systems for drainage and roads created ideal egg-laying sites for M. bivittatus, while the growth of broad-leaved weeds provided food and shelter.…”
