The effect of a natural molecule in ovary ischemia reperfusion damage: does lycopene protect ovary?

Abstract: Ovarian ischemia is a gynecological emergency case that occurs as a result of ovarian torsion. Oxidative stress plays a central role in the development of ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injuries. Lycopene (LYC) is a lipophilic, natural carotenoid well known for its antioxidant properties. This study provides information on the potential applications of lycopene. The Wistar Albino rats were distributed into six groups: Sham group (only a laparotomy was performed), Control group [laparotomy and intraperitoneal dissol… Show more

“…This scoring was considered as 0: no damage, 1: slightly damaged, 2: moderately damaged, 3: severely damaged. Damages such as hemorrhage and cellular shedding were involved as the scoring criteria 6 . Moreover, the amount of primordial, primary, secondary, and tertiary follicles in 10 different areas were counted.…”

“…As the clinical picture of ovarian torsion is generally nonspecific, delays in diagnosis and treatment might be experienced. Thus, the ischemia/reperfusion (IR) model has been employed in various studies, and numerous pharmacological agents have been investigated to reduce IRI 5–9 . In addition, ischemia reperfusion injury can negatively affect ovarian reserve, which is usually evaluated by anti‐Mullerian hormone (AMH) 10 .…”

“…Lycopene protects the cell from lipid peroxidation and oxidative DNA damage due to its highly effective antioxidant properties. It also has anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-amyloid, anti-ischemic and antitumor properties (12). Lycopene increases ATP synthesis and ETS chain activity.…”

“…In addition, due to its high lipid solvent properties, lycopene can cross the blood-brain barrier. It is also useful for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer (10,(12)(13). Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world.…”
