The Effect of a Multispecies Probiotic Mixture on the Symptoms and Fecal Microbiota in Diarrhea-dominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Abstract: The probiotic mixture was effective in providing AR of overall IBS symptoms and improvement of stool consistency in D-IBS patients, although it had no significant effect on individual symptoms. The therapeutic effect of probiotics is associated with the stabilization of intestinal microbiota.

“…have evaluated a probiotic mixture containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and S. thermophilus for 8 weeks and found an overall response rate of 48% versus 12% with placebo; though, it had no significant effect on individual symptoms. [21] The study by Williams et al . on a combination of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species also found greater improvement in IBS symptom severity and also in QOL compared with placebo over the 8-week intervention period.…”

“…The clinical score is considered to reflect the state of gastrointestinal diseases and is used as a reliable assessment tool for IBD patients [18, 31]. DSS-induced colitis in mice presents a variety of clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, bloody stool, or behavioral changes [30].…”

“…Duolac7S (DUO) is a probiotic mixture containing seven LAB species including Bifidobacterium , Lactobacillus , and Streptococcus . They are easily available, do not require a prescription, and are extensively used to relieve abdominal symptoms [17] by restoring the ecological balance in intestinal microflora [18]. However, in IBD the effect of DUO and its combination with LJ has not been investigated.…”

“…However, the clinical effect of probiotics on IBS is still controversial 11. Indeed, 34 out of 42 trials examining the efficacy of LAB in patients with IBS reported beneficial effects in at least one of the endpoints or symptoms examined,12 or an association with the stabilization of the intestinal microbiota 13. The results of other studies are difficult to compare because of the differences in study design and probiotic dose and strain 27.…”

“…Accordingly, probiotics are among the pharmacological agents approved for the treatment of IBS, although their clinical efficacy on IBS is still controversial 11. Indeed, 34 out of 42 trials examining lactic acid bacteria (LAB) effectiveness in patients with IBS showed beneficial effects in at least one of the endpoints or symptoms examined12 or an association with the stabilization of intestinal microbiota 13. In contrast, two other studies with LAB did not report any benefit 1415.…”
