The effect of a liquid seaweed extract from Ascophyllum nodosum (Fucales, Phaeophyta) on the two-spotted red spider mite Tetranychus urticae

Abstract: This paper presents evidence from an initial trial in favor of claims that the liquid seaweed extract of Ascophyllum nodosum, marketed in the UK as 'Maxicrop', can reduce numbers of the two-spotted red spider mite Tetranychus urticae on crop plants . Seven applications of Maxicrop Triple over 20 days significantly suppressed the population build-up of two-spotted red spider mites on treated strawberry plants (Fragaria sp . var . Redgauntlet) raised under high polythene tunnels as compared to untreated controls… Show more

“…Nevertheless, due to their combination of macro- and micro-nutrients, as well as the presence of natural plant growth hormones and other biostimulants, A. nodosum and, to a lesser extent, Fucus spp. continue to be used as biofertilizers [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], animal nutrition [ 25 , 26 , 27 ] and pest control [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. Indeed, nowadays, A. nodosum has found its major application in the fertilizers, animal feed and phytopharmaceuticals industries, it being possible to find a series of A. nodosum -based products, such Acadian ® , Agri-Gro Ultra, Alg-A-Mic, Maxicrop, Nitrozime, Soluble Seaweed Extract, Stimplex ® , Tasco ® and several others currently available on the market.…”

“…Therefore, the efforts to maximize the absorption of nutrients by spraying extracts of natural products that contain stimulants, is a strategic move to overcome the ill effects of the use of excessive doses of inorganic fertilizer. Results of previous studies reported that some liquid fertilizer products made from raw seaweeds are proven to increase the absorption of nutrients, which can enhance growth, development and production of various species of agricultural crops (Tay et al 1987, Hankins andHockey 1990). However, there is insufficient information on the effect of tropical water seaweed extract on the growth and yield of rice.…”

“…Marine algae represent an abundant, naturally occurring source of potential elicitors. Improved seed germination, higher yields and increased resistance to diseases were recorded upon treatment of various plants with algal extracts (Hankins & Hockey 1990;Jolivet, Langlais-Jeannin & Morot-Gaudry 1991). Due to their activity as plant protectants, it was proposed that algal extracts, which contain a variety of unique polysaccharides (Kloareg & Quatrano 1988), might act as elicitors of plant defence responses.…”
