The Effect of 3 Methods (Buzzy, ShotBlocker, and DistrACTION Cards) Used While Taking Blood Samples From Children with Pain and Anxiety

Abstract: Objectives:The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of 3 methods (Buzzy, ShotBlocker, and DistrACTION Cards) in reducing pain and anxiety while taking venous blood samples in children. Methods: The study population consisted of children aged 9 to 12 years admitted to the Child Health and Diseases Department in a Faculty of Medicine in Turkey. The sample of the study consisted of 242 children (Buzzy = 60, ShotBlocker = 61, DistrACTION Cards = 60, control = 61) who met the patient selection criteri… Show more

“…The results of the risk of bias assessment for all studies are presented in Figure 2 . Although all studies claimed to have conducted random allocation, four of them [ 12 , 21 , 22 , 24 ] did not explicitly mention the method used for randomization, resulting in an unclear risk of bias. Regarding allocation concealment bias, eight studies did not clearly specify allocation concealment [ 12 , 13 , 15 , 22 , 24 , 28 , 30 ] resulting in an unclear risk of bias.…”

“…Two studies [ 13 , 21 ] lacked available protocols and were not registered as clinical trials, resulting in an unclear risk of bias. In terms of other biases, seven studies [ 12 , 15 , 17 , 24 , 25 ] were categorized as unclear risk of bias due to reasons such as baseline characteristic imbalances or randomization type.…”

“…The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) states that pain is an uncomfortable emotional and sensory event related to, or similar to, existing or potential tissue damage ( Raja etal.,2020). Pain is considered the "fifth vital sign" that needs to be monitored in medical care and is one of the significant events in children's lives (Sivri, et al, 2022).…”
