The economics of yield‐driven processes

Abstract: The economic performance of many modern production processes is substantially influenced by process yields. Their first effect is on product cost -in some cases, low-yields can cause costs to double or worse. Yet measuring only costs can substantially underestimate the importance of yield improvement. We show that yields are especially important in periods of constrained capacity, such as new product ramp-up. Our analysis is illustrated with numerical examples taken from hard disk drive manufacturing. A three … Show more

“…Therefore, production costs and scrap rate are decreasing rapidly [20]. In the semiconductor context, priority is to reduce ramp-up time and to achieve as soon as possible a good yield [21], because of the product life cycle, characterized by decreasing of the prices and short life time [7]. Experience on the past product and learning curves [20] can provide estimation of the scrap rate.…”

“…Lastly, the firm's absolute production capacity will impact the ability of the firm to scale-up the production process (Bohn and Terwiesch 1999;Krishnan and Ulrich 2001;Terwiesch et al 2001). Effective capacity utilization determines the plant's performance during production scale-up (Bohn and Terwiesch 1999).…”

“…The time required for ramp-up of the line after relocation should be planned deliberately and with no excessive optimism. The rampup process itself is relatively well known and described [14][15][16].…”
