The dietary, productivity, and economic value of swiftlet (Aerodramus fuciphagus) farming in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2528-2537. Edible-nest swiftlets have many health benefits. The availability of edible-nest swiftlets from caves is decreasing, while the demand for edible-nest swiftlets is getting higher. Swiftlet farming is carried out to meet this demand. The location of swiftlet farming should be close to the feeding sources. Swiftlet is flying insectivorous animals. A financial feasibility assessment is carried out to determine the feasibility of the business. This study aims to determine the composition of land cover, determine the insect order of feed sources, and analyze the production and financial feasibility of swiftlet farming. The study was carried out from June to December 2019. The composition of land cover was determined using the supervised classification method, the order of insects was known using the insect determination key, while production and financial feasibility were analyzed using the Net B/C, NPV, IRR, and PP methods. The observed location and swiftlet farming were determined purposefully. The results of this study show that the land cover was dominated by shrubs (56.58%) and secondary forest (27.3%); both types of land cover are suitable for swiftlet farming locations. The dominant insects found in shrubs and wetland shrubs are Diptera (78.25%), in rice fields are Diptera (86.7%) and in oil palm plantations are Diptera (29.4%) and Hymenoptera (27.78%). Edible-nest swiftlets harvest begins in the third year, with a production period of between 17-34 years. From the financial feasibility, it can be concluded that swiftlet farming is feasible.

Competitiveness is one of the essential factors in increasing exports of agricultural commodities to export markets. Indonesia is a significant producer and exporter of swiftlet nest products globally. This research aims to study Indonesian edible-nest swiftlet competitiveness and development potential in the primary export destination market in the RCEP (the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) area. The study uses secondary export-import data between countries sourced from UN Comtrade from 2009 to 2019. Analyze competitiveness and potential for product development using the RCA, RSCA, EPD, and IIT methods. The study results show that, comparatively, Indonesian swiftlet nests are competitive in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore markets and are not competitive in Australia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. The export markets of China and Vietnam are promising because they have reached the ideal position of a rising star. Meanwhile, the Thai market has the potential to be developed because the export market is still growing. The Singapore market also needs to be considered to create high-value processed products because it has relatively strong integration with the Indonesian swallow nest production structure.

The edible bird nest business has both potential and challenges. Regional and seasonal characteristics affect edible bird nest production. The dry season causes temperature to rise and affects the swiftlet foraging behavior. Efforts to overcome these challenges require strategy. Research aims to: 1) analyze the factors in the edible bird nest business; 2) formulate strategies for swiftlet farmers in facing the season; 3) formulate economic and social strategies for the development of edible bird nest business. Qualitative research method with a case study approach. The research from April to June 2023 in Pulang Pisau Regency, with characteristics of river, forest, and swamp areas. Informants were swiftlet farmers. This research uses SWOT analysis to combine strengths and opportunities to overcome weaknesses and threats. The research results: 1) internal factors are strengths (population, high selling value, quality, benefits) and weaknesses (large capital, long preparation, seasonal influence); external factors are opportunities (high market demand, suitable location) and threats (licensing, high land prices, pest attacks, theft, sewage waste, ecosystem imbalance); 2) strategies in the dry season by using dew water technology, air ventilation, temperature and humidity timers; 3) economic strategies by increasing population and product quality; social strategies by increasing cooperation networks with stakeholders.
