“…Because our results show limited evidence that seed germination is season specific, plants may experience cold at different life stages (i.e., at seed, or rosette, or both for perennials that do not flower their first year). This is similar to Lobelia gattingeri (Baskin and Baskin, 1979) and Campanula americana (Baskin and Baskin, 1984), where seeds are capable of germinating in either autumn or spring. However, in contrast to C. americana, which has an absolute requirement for vernalization regardless of prior stratification, we find significant interactions between stratification and vernalization treatments on traits expressed during later life stages, which may mean that selection is acting across combinations of cold cues.…”

“…Seeds of L. appendiculata are also dormant at maturity and will germinate to high percentages following cold stratification (Baskin and Baskin, 1979). Seeds that had been buried in soil under natural temperature regimes since 1990 were exhumed in March 2005, after receiving a winter cold-stratification treatment.…”

“…The annual Lobelia gattingeri is highly variable in size and seed production, and it competes poorly with the annual grass Sporobolus vaginiflorus although the latter is more susceptible to spring drought than the Lobelia (Baskin and Baskin, 1979).
