The earliest surviving textiles in East Asia from Chertovy Vorota Cave, Primorye Province, Russian Far East

Abstract: Carbonised textiles were found in a burnt down building inside a cave 30km from the far eastern coast of Russia. The textiles were made from untwisted or hand-twisted blades of sedge grass to form ropes, nets and woven mats. Dated by AMS to c. 9400–8400 cal BP these are the earliest textiles so far known from East Asia.

“…Based on δ 15 N values, the Cherepakha 13 individuals are close to those of the Chertovy Vorota site, with the diet of the latter based on a mixture of terrestrial animals and anadromous fish (Kuzmin et al , 2012; however, the former is much higher in terms of δ 13 C values than the latter (-10.2‰ vs. -17.6‰) (see Figure 3). The δ 13 C signatures of the Cherepakha 13 humans are also higher compared to those for the Early Iron Age and Medieval populations in the Amur River basin, with the diet based on a mixture of terrestrial animals, C 4 plants (domesticated millets), and C 3 plants (mainly wheat) (see Kuzmin 2015).…”

“…Several 14 C values in the range of -7300-6040 BP were obtained (Batarshev et al 2010). The earliest extant textile remains in East Asia were dated to -8215-7710 BP at another site of the Rudnaya culture, Chertovy Vorota (see Kuzmin et al 2012a). The Middle Neolithic Vetka complex at Sheklyaevo 7 site is dated to 6045 ± 50 BP (AA-60055) and 5845 ± 100 BP (AA-60052); the Luzanova Sopka 2 site dates to 5865 ± 75 BP (AA-60504).…”

“…In northern Spain, Stone (2011) found evidence from wear on bone tools that they had been used for working perishable materials, while the Antrea net from Finland was directly dated to 9,310 ± 120 bp (Miettinen et al 2008). Another direct dating of textiles comes from the cave site of Chertovy Vorota, Russia, and ranges between 8,215 ± 55 and 7,710 ± 50 bp (Kuzmin et al 2012). Later in the Holocene, references to finds of tools, wooden structures and plant fibres preserved on coasts and in lakes in northern Europe become increasingly numerous (Fischer 1995;Wigforss 2014).…”
