The dynamics of XeCl discharge contraction

Abstract: The processes of formation and development of spatial non-uniformities of a high-pressure (p = 1 - 4 bar) electrical discharge in a Ne - Xe - HCl excimer gas mixture have been studied experimentally. It has been shown that transformation of the discharge into the constricted state is preceded by the low-current () uniform glow phase. The longitudinal discharge structure which is formed consists of three main regions: a bright cathode sheath glow, dark space and a positive column. A subsequent current increase … Show more

“…This result may not indicate that the reason of halogen donor depression leads to instability. Generally, the initiation of instability has been observed by Dreiskemper and Boetticher (1995), Makarov (1995) and Makarov and Bychkov (1996). The local strong emission of electrons from the cathode, through heating up the gas, may bring filamental instability with high probability.…”

“…Recently the dynamic behaviour of micro-discharges in XeCl excimer laser discharges has been observed optically by Makarov (1995), Makarov and Bychkov (1996) and Dreiskemper and Boetticher (1995). In their works the micro-discharges were shown to occur in the cathode fall region and develop in the direction of the anode.…”

“…Furthermore, the switch inductance reduces the achievable pump power and in-creases the discharge current rise time. The latter is assumed to reduce the discharge stability [12].…”
