Structural health monitoring is essential for ensuring the structural safety performance during the service life. The process is of paramount importance in the case of the Pelamis wave energy converter due to the structural parts being subjected to the marine environmental risky conditions and consequently, power take-off system damage. In this paper, a fuzzy-based damage detection method using the dynamic response of the Pelamis type P1 is proposed. Accurate modeling of a dynamic system with simple dynamic equations is one of the important steps of damage detection process; for this purpose, the equations of the motion of the Pelamis system is derived using the Lagrangian method for creating a discrete model of the Pelamis in the first step. For validating the obtained model, scaled experimental model of the Pelamis is provided, and modal analysis is carried out. Then, the features in the frequency spectrum of the structure response in each degree of freedom as a result of power take-off damaged conditions are considered as inputs to the fuzzy system. Also, the fuzzy system is trained based on calibrating the membership functions by defining the damage classes appropriately. For validating the proposed method, noise with different signal to noise ratios is inserted to the measured features and the success rate of the damage detection is calculated. The results show that the proposed method is able to identify the damage classes with acceptable success rate.

Considering the case of ASV (autonomous surface vehicle) navigating with low speed near water surface, a new method for design of roll motion controller is proposed in order to restrain wave disturbance effectively and improve roll stabilizing performance. Control system design is based on GPC (general predictive control) theory and working principle of zero-speed fin stabilizer. Coupling horizontal motion model of ASV is decoupled, and an equivalent transfer function of roll motion is obtained and transformed into a discrete difference equation through inverse Laplace transformation and Euler approximation. Finally, predictive model of GPC, namely, the difference equation of roll motion, is given. GPC algorithm of ASV roll motion is derived from performance index based on roll stabilizing performance and energy consumption used for driving fin stabilizer. In allusion to time-variant parameters in roll motion model, recursive least square method is adopted for parameter estimation. Simulation results of ASV roll motion control show better stabilizing performance and minimized energy consumption improved by self-adaptive GPC.

Nowadays, drifters are used for a wide range of applications for researching and exploring the sea. However, the power constraint makes it difficult for their sampling intervals to be smaller, meaning that drifters cannot transmit more accurate measurement data to satellites. Furthermore, due to the power constraint, a modern Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifter lives an average of 400 days before ceasing transmission. To overcome the power constraint of SVP drifters, this article proposes an adaptively counter-rotating wave energy converter (ACWEC) to supply power for drifters. The ACWEC has the advantages of convenient modular integration, simple conversion process, and minimal affection by the crucial sea environment. This article details the design concept and working principle, and the interaction between the wave energy converter (WEC) and wave is presented based on plane wave theory. To verify the feasibility of the WEC, the research team carried out a series of experiments in a wave tank with regular and irregular waves. Through experiments, it was found that the power and efficiency of the ACWEC are greatly influenced by parameters such as wave height and wave frequency. The maximum output power of the small scale WEC in a wave tank is 6.36 W, which allows drifters to detect ocean data more frequently and continuously.
