The Dynamics of Beech Roundwood Prices in Selected Central European Markets

Abstract: The European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is the most prevalent deciduous tree species in Central Europe. The implementation of sustainable, close-to-nature silvicultural practices increased the percentage share of beech in forest species composition, raising the economic significance of beech roundwood, especially in terms of revenues from timber sales. The elucidation of roundwood price mechanisms as well as long-term equilibrium relations between international markets may be helpful in calculating the profita… Show more

“…Eriksson et al [15] reported that in Sweden and Nordic countries, spruce sawlogs prices fell after the Gudrun storm in 2005 until the 2010s and did not regain ante-storm prices. Conifer timber is not the only wood affected by market price fluctuations; however, studying the dynamics of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) roundwood prices in Central European markets, Ko żuch et al [16] found that yearly price variation was more due to political and economic instabilities (i.e., the economic crisis in 2008/09) than to extreme natural events. Regarding the quality of salvage harvest timber, the issue still remains widely uncovered across the literature for what concerns wood mechanical properties.…”

“…Recently, significant changes in the timber market have been observed, not only in Poland [14,15,[39][40][41] but also in other countries [22,[42][43][44]. Climate change is becoming more severe.…”

“…In the future, this work will inevitably continue in similar research studies since the ratio of the highest quality classes is decreasing, and new possibilities of its increase have to be researched. It can subsequently bring more finances to forest management [42,43]. Furthermore, it is important to search for a qualified workforce who understand the issue and will carry out the required tasks correctly and precisely, which is associated with creating a system of positive and negative motivation [44,45].…”
