“…Patients with recurrent brief depression experience depressive symptoms only intermittently (only 15-20 % of the duration of follow-up) and therefore cannot fulfil criteria for dysthymia ; similarly only 3 % of patients experience brief hypomanic episodes (Montgomery et al 1990). Suicide attempts appear common, especially in the group with combined depression, although this may result from referral bias.…”

“…The current understanding of RBD is of a disorder characterized by episodes of depression recurring monthly over a year that fulfill the full diagnostic criteria for major depressive episodes except for being shorter than the required 2-week duration (DSM-IV-TR;American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Although the occurrence of episodes can be erratic and highly variable, the literature suggests that the majority of episodes have a duration of 1-4 days with an average interepisode interval of 18 days (range 1-5 weeks) (Angst and Dobler-Mikola, 1985;Montgomery et al, 1990). Despite its brief duration, RBD has significant clinical impact because of the frequency and unpredictability of recurrences, severity and the association with increased risk of suicidal behavior (Montgomery et al, 1983;Angst, 1994).…”

“…The findings of epidemiological and clinical studies show that many (∼7%) individuals are affected by short-lived ('brief', lasting less than 2 weeks) but highly recurrent episodes of typically severe and markedly impairing depressive symptoms (Angst and Dobler-Mikola, 1985;Montgomery et al, 1990;Maier et al, 1994;Weiller et al, 1994;Carta et al, 2003;Pezawas et al, 2003).
