“…The current study confirms infections predominantly in geese, ducks, cockerells, pigeons and especially domestics (Adler, 1959;Jungherr, 1959;Frost, 1961;Carnaghan, 1966;Ackerman et al , 1974;Wise, 1975;Montali, 1988;Olson & Kerr, 1967;Quesenberry, 1997;Saif, 2003), but also documents its occurrence in swans and birds of prey (Table 1). The frequencies, however, were statistically indistinguishable among families.…”

“…The groups inoculated with M. synoviae at 8 weeks of age (LCh and HTu groups) had significantly lower positive cultures compared with the LHCh group, which was reinoculated with M. synoviae at 12 weeks of age. This is in accordance with other studies performed in chickens, where the isolation of M. synoviae was shown to decrease with the chronicity of the infection, with few or no mycoplasmas being detected in blood and/or joint samples examined 6 to 8 weeks after inoculation (Olson & Kerr, 1967;Kawakubo et al, 1980;Landman & Feberwee, 2004). Another factor contributing to the poor yields may have been the low sensitivity of mycoplasma culture as it is currently performed, which could be circumvented by using a more sensitive PCR for the detection of M. synoviae in joints (Dijkman et al, 2011).…”

“…Both, infectious and non-infectious conditions may be responsible for lameness due to joint problems in the young and the adult turkey (Olson et al, 1956;Clark et al, 1981;Huff et al, 2000;Kleven & Ferguson-Noel, 2008). Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale are commonly associated with joint disease in turkeys (Nairn, 1973;Huff et al, 2000;Szalay et al, 2002).…”

“…The sustained growth of strain PS in TOC for at least 37 days at high titre suggested the possibility of long-term persistence of such viruses in tendons in vivo as has been reported for reoviruses in experimental tenosynovitis (Olson and Kerr, 1967;Jones and Onunkwo, 1978).…”
