The Dual Antimelanogenic and Antioxidant Activities of the Essential Oil Extracted from the Leaves ofAcorus macrospadiceus(Yamamoto) F. N. Wei et Y. K. Li

Abstract: The antimelanogenic and antioxidant activities of the essential oil extracted from the leaves of Acorus macrospadiceus (Yamamoto) F. N. Wei et Y. K. Li have never been explored. The essential oil effectively inhibited mushroom tyrosinase activity (EC50 = 1.57 mg/mL) and B16F10 tyrosinase activity (IC50 = 1.01 mg/mL), decreased the melanin content (EC50 = 1.04 mg/mL), and depleted the cellular level of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) (EC50 = 1.87 mg/mL). The essential oil effectively scavenged 2,2-diphenyl-1-… Show more

“…Further, we have screened over thirty types of plants and evaluated the potential dermatological effects of the essential oils extracted from these plants, and found the essential oils isolated from the leaves of Vitex negundo Linn and Acorus macrospadiceus (Yamamoto, F. N. Wei, Y. K. Li et al .) exhibit antioxidant activities and antimelanogenic properties [34,56]. Therefore, the chemical constituents found in Artemisia argyi leaves may play major roles in the biological activities and pharmacological properties, but the biological roles of the chemicals in both essential oils still remained to be elucidated in the near future.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that some phenolic components of EOs are oxidized by contact with reactive oxygen species (ROS) producing very reactive phenoxyl radicals. These types of radical reactions are enhanced by the presence of transition metal ions, such as Fe 2+ , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , or Mn 2+ [44,45,46]. In this regard, some studies have shown higher oxidative stability of ethanolic EOs.…”

“…In recent years, the medicinal values of Acorus were increasingly recognized, and more Acorus materials had been collected for medications ( Huang et al, 2012 ; Shu et al, 2018a ). Unfortunately, the authorized taxonomic treatment of Acorus species confused collectors and consumers with their classification, partly because of their similar morphology, especially when dried.…”
