Television is the most popular media in Turkey and it plays a crucial role in representation and reproduction of gender roles in society. There are a few research documents focusing on gender representation on Turkish television. The Turkish Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) owns great authority on deciding what is appropriate and moral for society and what is a danger and risk for national and moral values, hence, on‐screen representation of gender, sexuality, and sexual identity is of concern to this institution, which in return is leading to self‐censorship for channel management and producers of various TV programs. Studies show that there is a stereotypical gender representation on TV that traps women into sexualized bodies or desexualized mothers. Moreover, there is almost no visibility of independent women and LGBTI characters in TV dramas.
