“…The diagnosis of CD is usually made on the basis of histopathologic [16,17], radiologic [22,23], endoscopic [18,21] and clini cal data [24,25], Endoscopy and radiology mainly show mucosal abnormalities, even if bowel wall thickness can be sometimes mea sured on plain film and contrast studies [28]. Abdominal ultrasonography can demon strate an increase in intestinal wall thickness and has been proposed as a simple, noninvasive method in CD, particularly as a possible screening procedure in cases in whom radiologic or endoscopic examinations are con traindicated [1,9] and in follow-up of pa tients.…”

“…In this group 89 subjects had a definite diagnosis of CD (35 with ileal disease, 33 with ileo colic and 21 with colonic location), 57 had UC and 35 were controls (table 1). A definite diagnosis of CD and UC had been established on the basis of histo logic [ 16,17], endoscopic [18][19][20][21], radiologic [22,23] and clinical criteria [24,25]. Activity of disease was mild in 80% of CD and 100% of UC and moderate in 20% of CD [26] and no patient, at the time of US examination, was taking corticosteroids.…”

“…Failure to detect mild colitis radiologically was found in 18% of patients using a single contrast barium enema [6], compared to only 3.2% with a double contrast examination [9]. In one study where the sigmoidoscopic changes were graded and compared to single and double contrast examinations, mild sigmoidoscopic abnormalities were only detectable on the double contrast examination [10]. Therefore it must For a complete examination thorough bowel preparation is essential.…”

“…In some series endoscopy proved more reliable for assessment of inflammation than did radiography in a large proportion of cases [7][8][9][10]. Closer conformity is reported by other authors [11,12]. In two studies the findings of radiography and colonoscopy or rectoscopy correlated in roughly 95% of the cases [13,14].…”
