Background and objectives:The dental radiographic examinations rank among the most frequent radiographic procedures. Since the radiation risks for different organs vary with age, exposure and sex. The specific objectives of this study include investigation of ESD using Thermo Luminescent Dosimeter (TLD-100) for patients undergoing dental x-ray examination. Patients and methods: ESD was measured using LiF Thermo Luminescent Dosimeters (TLD-100) on the skin (either mandibular or maxillary arcs) for all patients. Monte Carlo simulation was performed to estimate an effective dose (ED) by using PCXMC Dose Calculation software. Analysis of data was carried out using the available statistical package of SPSS-22 (Statistical Packages for Social Sciences-version 22). Results: The mean of the effective dose for 1-15 years old patients undergoing maxillary molar dental x-ray examination were 3.734 μSv, 3.505μSv for females and males, respectively. For 16-30 years old, the mean of the effective dose were 6.212 μSv, 3.530 μSv for females and males, respectively. And for 31-60 years old were 3.220 μSv and 3.209 μSv for females and males, respectively. Also for patients undergoing the mandibular molar dental x-ray examinations, the mean effective dose for 1-15 years old were 4.998 μSv, 3.969 μSv for females and males, respectively. For 16-30 years old were 3.270 μSv, 1.170 μSv for females and males, respectively. And for 31-60 years old were 2.020 μSv, 1.131 μSv for females and males, respectively. Conclusion:The use of the entrance surface dose(ESD) or effective dose(ED) is not an accurate indicator for physicians to judge the radiation risk of an x-ray examination in accordance with the result of the present study. The overall risk from radiation in children was more than in adults and in female patients was more than in male patients. It is recommended that the average risk caused by exposure be considered as a guide to assess the risk and benefit for each age group.

Background: X-ray examination is associated with patient exposure to ionizing radiation. Dose values depend on the type of medical procedure used, the X-ray unit technical condition and exposure conditions selected. The aim of this study was to determine the dose value received by patients during certain conventional radiography X-ray examinations and to assess the technical condition of medical equipment used for this purpose. Material and Methods: The study covered the total number of 118 conventional diagnostic X-ray units located in the Masovian Voivodeship. The methodology used to assess the conventional diagnostic X-ray unit technical condition and the measurement of the radiation dose rate received by patients are based on test procedures developed by the Department of Radiation Protection and Radiobiology of the National Institute of Public Health -National Institute of Hygiene (Warszawa, Poland) accredited for compliance with PN-EN 17025 standard by the Polish Centre for Accreditation. Results: It was found that 84.7% of X-ray units fully meet the criteria set out in the Polish legislation regarding the safe use of ionizing radiation in medicine, while 15.3% of the units do not meet some of them. The broadest dose value range was recorded for adult patients. Particularly, during lateral (LAT) lumbar spine radiography the recorded entrance surface dose (ESD) values ranged from 283.5 to 7827 μGy (mean: 2183.3 μGy). Conclusions: It is absolutely necessary to constantly monitor the technical condition of all X-ray units, because it affects population exposure to ionizing radiation. Furthermore, it is essential to raise radiographers' awareness of the effects that ionizing radiation exposure can have on the human body. StreszczenieWstęp: Stosowanie w procedurach stomatologicznych promieniowania rentgenowskiego (rtg.) powoduje narażenie pacjenta na promieniowanie jonizujące. Wielkość tego narażenia zależy przede wszystkim od parametrów stosowanych przy prześwietleniu zęba. Celem badań było określenie wielkości dawek, na jakie narażeni są pacjenci, oraz ocena stanu technicznego aparatów rtg. Materiał i metody: Badaniami ankietowymi objęto 1700 gabinetów stomatologicznych. Ankiety odesłało 740 jednostek. Pomiary bezpośrednie wykonano w 100 gabinetach. Pomiary wykonano za pomocą detektorów termoluminescencyjnych i klisz rtg. Wyniki: W przeprowadzonych badaniach stwierdzono, że najczęściej stosowany czas ekspozycji wynosi 0,22±0,16 s. Średnia dawka wejściowa dla parametrów najczęściej stosowanych przez stomatologów to 1,7±1,4 mGy. Średnia wydajność lampy rtg. oszacowana na podstawie wykonanych ekspozycji wynosi 46,5±23,7 μGy/mAs. Wnioski: Jak wynika z przeprowadzonych badań, znakomita większość aparatów rtg. punktowych spełnia wymagania określone w przepisach. Med. This exposure depends primarily on the parameters used in tooth examination. The aim of the study was to determine the patients exposure and to assess the technical condition of X-ray tubes. Material and Methods: Seventeen hundred dental offices were covered by the questionnaire survey and 740 questionnaires were sent back. Direct measurements were performed in 100 units by using the thermoluminescent detectors and X-ray films. Results: The results showed that the most commonly used exposure time is 0.22±0.16 s. The average entrance dose for the parameters used most commonly by dentists is 1.7±1.4 mGy. The average efficiency of X-ray tube estimated on the basis of exposures is 46.5±23.7 μGy/mAs.
