The Dose Received by Patients During Dental X-Ray Examination and the Technical Condition of Radiological Equipment

Abstract: The research found that 69.6% fully meets the criteria set out in the Polish legislation regarding the safe use of ionizing radiation in medicine, while 30.4% did not meet some of them. A tenfold difference in the size of the dose received by patients during dental X-ray examinations was discovered. For example, during a radiography of the canine teeth of a child, the recorded entrance surface dose (ESD) ranged from 72.8 to 2430 microGy with the average value of 689.1 microGy. Cases where the dose reference le… Show more

“…12 However the averaged dose for intra-oral radiography can be assessed from data which ranged from less than 1 to around 20 µSv. 7,10 Finally, in Figure 1 and 2, we show the ESD/mGy and ED/µSv comparisons between the males and females in the three age groups for maxillary molar and mandibular molar dental examinations, respectively. In general, the exposure radiation in this study is considered to be low, but the exposure to a child is something larger than the adult.…”

“…At the outset of the study, it was necessary to determine the number of X-ray units used in the Masovian Voivodeship. For this purpose the MZ-52 report Assessing the dose values received by patients Nr 6 717 spot size and the distance between the X-ray focal spot and the image recorder (6,8,9). Each of these parameters was subject to a separate assessment.…”

“…The data obtained from the preliminary test allowed to determine the necessary number of X-ray units that should be examined (63 X-ray units). The correctness of the selection of the research sample was estimated using the dependence given by Hellwig (7,8). It was necessary to carry out the estimation of the standard deviation and the maximum error of estimate (tolerance) was determined on the basis of selected parameters of the X-ray units.…”
