The direct determination of the crystal structure of NaB(OH)4.2H2O

Abstract: The structure of NaB(OH)4.2H20 has been determined by direct methods. Three-dimensional Cu Kc~ single-crystal data were used. The space group is Pi, Z = 2 and the cell dimensions are: a = 6.126 ±0.008 A b = 8.180±0.008A c = 6.068 ±0.008 A a = 67 °55'±07' fl = 110 ° 35'±07' 7 = 101° 51'±07'The structure consists of discrete tetrahedral B(OH)~-groups and octahedrally coordinated sodium ions. An octahedron shares two edges to form chains parallel to the [100] direction. The chains are linked in the [001] directio… Show more

“…[24] The unit cell volumes suggest that the size of anions change according to the sequence I -Ͼ BH 4 -Ͼ Br -Ͼ Cl -. The final product of NaBH 4 hydrolysis, the isostoichiometric Na[B(OH) 4 ]·2H 2 O, [25] contains Na n (H 2 O) n chains linked by anions into layers, similar to those in NaI·2H 2 O. Isostoichiometric compounds containing tetrahedral anions other than BH 4 -reveal 3D framework structures where ligands display a different denticity. For example, the dihydrogenphosphate anion in Na[H 2 (PO 4 )]·2H 2 O acts as a tridentate ligand, and moreover, one water molecule is bridging and the other is terminal.…”

“…This demonstrates that the B(OH ion is coordinated in the form of unidentate and the Na-O B -B angles of the contact ion pair was obtained to about 143°, which is close to the average Na-O B -B angles of the crystal structure of sodium metaborate [17,18]. The Na-B interaction also implies the existence of a three ion cluster.…”

“…Although these exhibit visible differences across the series measured, it is not immediately obvious whether they reflect structural differences affected by concentration change. In order to get a clearer struc [17,18]. The third peak at 0.23 nm is ascribed to the Na + -H 2 O interaction in the first hydration shell of the hydrated Na + ion, on the and Na(BOH) 4 [18], the previous findings [5,19] and the sum of the ionic radius of Na + and the size of a water molecule (0.14 nm).…”
