El propósito del artículo es analizar cómo ha evolucionado el uso de los ordenadores para la investigación diplomática a lo largo del último medio siglo, para establecer un estado de la cuestión y las posi-bles perspectivas. Para ello se procede a un análisis de la bibliografía relevante en lengua española, inglesa, francesa e italiana que se ha ocupado de la metodología de la investigación diplomática en las últimas décadas, así como de aquellos trabajos que han planteado propuestas específicas del uso del ordenador para la edición y análisis de documentos históricos. El artículo pone en evidencia las fases en las que la evolución tecnológica ha ido condicionando sus posibles usos en el análisis diplomático, y concluye que las posibilidades analíticas del ordenador para la disciplina aún están infrautilizadas.

“…Since IBM's punched card systems were mainly built for accounting purposes, the processing of text for Busa's project required the invention of a complex tool chain -or a technical ensemble in Simondon's terminologythat combined several machines, beginning with a typewriter-like punching machine for digitizing the full text and ending with a card sorter (Winter, 1999). With the support of IBM and the resources of the Catholic Church at his disposal, Busa constructed a hybrid technical schema or 'program', combining single-task data processing machinery with the manual labor of (female) typists and (male) clergy (Birnbaum et al, 2017;Busa, 1980). What is actually possible in technology depends, in no small part, on the available means and Busa could compensate for the technical limitations of the time with an early version of Amazon's Mechanical Turk.…”

Accounts of the rise and construction of dominant technologies can serve as a framework to understand how technologies can take root and acquire meaning in cultural domains such as arts, heritage, and digital humanities. On a broader, societal level, such frameworks can overlap with studies on datafication, which critically examine how dominant technologies transform the ordering of information and knowledge and its impacts on social life. In his recent book Engines of Order: A Mechanology of Algorithmic Techniques, new media scholar Bernhard Rieder examines how these information ordering techniques are embedded in technical infrastructures and economic logics, and how they “act as engines of order that actively modulate relationships between users and circulating units of various kind operate on existing patterns and fault lines in diversified yet unequal societies.”

There is hardly any aspect of scholarly work and teaching in Roman Studies today not marked by digital technology. We assume that readers regularly access digital images of Roman material culture, use digitised corpora of primary sources in the original language or translation or consult online books and articles. The availability of digital resources on the internet is also a welcome enabler of ongoing public interest and even participation in the field. This overall state of affairs is generally a positive development, but both general trends and specific digital resources deserve a critical appraisal.
