The Differential Proliferative Ability of Satellite Cells in Lantang and Landrace Pigs

Abstract: Here, for the first time, we evaluate the hypothesis that the proliferative abilities of satellite cells (SCs) isolated from Lantang (indigenous Chinese pigs) and Landrace pigs, which differ in muscle characteristics, are different. SCs were isolated from the longissimus dorsi muscle of neonatal Lantang and Landrace pigs. Proliferative ability was estimated by the count and proliferative activity of viable cells using a hemocytometer and MTT assay at different time points after seeding, respectively. Cell cycl… Show more

“…In the juvenile pig, the SC pool has been shown to be a critical component of both hyperplastic and hypertrophic processes61128. However, established mixed (mass) cultures of pig SC and myoblasts do not reflect the marked functional heterogeneity that has been shown to exist in SC pools of other species375051.…”

“…In addition, in early postnatal muscle, a high number of slowly proliferating SC is present72526 generating fusion-competent myoblasts that contribute DNA to growing myofibers, thereby increasing their capacity for protein synthesis122728. However, some SC can also divide asymmetrically to give rise to both myonuclei and SC9111518.…”

“…In addition, as a Chinese indigenous pig, the proliferative potential of satellite cells in Mashen pig was higher than in western commercial breed. (Wang et al, 2012). The percentage of activated satellite cells in Mashen pig could be greater than in Large White at the same stage.…”
