The dielectric properties of the cerebellum, cerebrum and brain stem of mouse brain at radiowave and microwave frequencies

Abstract: The relative permittivity and conductivity of the cerebellum, cerebrum and brain stem of mouse brain were measured at a temperature of 37 degrees C over a frequency range of 72 MHz to over 5 GHz using time-domain spectroscopy. An analysis of the data suggests that the water exists in various forms of binding with an average relaxation frequency less than free water.

“…The dielectric properties of biological tissues have been widely studied and reviewed, providing a huge database of dielectric properties of biological tissues of humans and different kinds of animals, including rats, pigs, mice, rabbits, bovines, dogs, and felines [Lin, 1975;Lin et al, 1975;Foster et al, 1979;Schepps and Foster, 1980;Foster and Schepps, 1981;Stuchly et al, 1981;Nightingale et al, 1983;Thurai et al, 1985;Surowiec et al, 1988;Joines et al, 1994;Foster and Schwan, 1995;Gabriel et al, 1996;Peyman et al, 2002Peyman et al, , 2007Schmid et al, 2003;Karacolak et al, 2009;Peyman and Gabriel, 2010]. In addition to its benefits for general knowledge, data about dielectric properties of biological tissues are important for examining and testing new microwave imaging systems [Abubakar et al, 2002;Zhang and Liu, 2004;Ireland and Abbosh, 2013;Mobashsher et al, 2014;Mohammed et al, 2014].…”
