The development of self-regulation across early childhood.

Abstract: The development of early childhood self-regulation is often considered an early life marker for later life successes. Yet little longitudinal research has evaluated whether there are different trajectories of self-regulation development across children. This study investigates the development of behavioral self-regulation between the ages of three and seven, with a direct focus on possible heterogeneity in the developmental trajectories, and a set of potential indicators that distinguish unique behavioral self… Show more

“…As Montroy et al (2016) noted the developmental trajectories for behavioral self-regulation from 3 to 7 years are important. At age 4–5 years and, even before age 4, sufficient family supports can be provided to ensure that children begin school with requisite skills to attend and engage productively in classroom activities.…”

“…Early childhood is characterized by individual differences that underlie rapid growth in EF (Montroy, Bowles, Skibbe, McClelland, & Morrison, 2016). Inhibitory control has been a particular focus of research attention because it is among the earliest EF components to develop in young children (Diamond, 2016) and is fundamental to regulating one’s behaviors during the transition to formal schooling.…”

“…Some groups of children may behave differently initially and yet reach similar levels of skill at a later age point (e.g., Montroy, Bowles, Skibbe, McClelland, & Morrison, 2016; Wanless et al, 2016). Other groups of children may not differ markedly from each other initially, and yet each follows a different developmental path, one perhaps deviating from a more typical path.…”
