The Development of Mono-Sized Micro Silicon Particles for Spherical Solar Cells by Pulsated Orifice Ejection Method

Abstract: Mono-sized silicon particles were effectively fabricated by a novel way named pulsated orifice ejection method (POEM). The particles are with very narrow particles size distribution and very small standard deviation of mean particle size. There are two different types spherical silicon particles were found. One consists of many grains mainly in random boundaries. The other consists of two or three grains with only twin orientation relationships, even single crystal in cross-section was also found within this t… Show more

“…Compared to other methods, POME can prepare mono-sized, high surface quality and internal uniform microstructure solder balls, and it has the high production efficiency [11,12]. The object of this work is to prepare monosized solder balls using the POEM and investigate the effect of rod displacement and gas pressure on the size of solder balls.…”

“…Nowadays, mono-sized particles, which have the same size and high sphericity, are drawing greater attention in a number of scientific fields. Semiconductor microspheres, represented by the spherical silicon particles, can be used in electronic, optical and energy fields [1]. Mono-sized spherical particles of alloys have been required for hot isostatic pressing (HIP) [2] to prevent the fracture due to the formation of inhomogeneous distribution of pores.…”

“…However, gas atomization method and rotation spraying method are not suitable for producing mono-sized particles; sol-gel method is not suitable for producing particles with large size; in PREP method, the critical smallest particle size is about 100 µm due to the limitation of the rotating stability of an electrode; while the precise control are quite tough job for CIJ technique. POEM developed by Kawasaki Laboratory is capable of producing mono-sized spherical micro particles; so far, mono-sized solder particles with the diameter less than 100µm and size distribution less than 1% in standard deviation have been successfully prepared [1,8,9]. POEM apparatus mainly consists of a high temperature furnace, an ejection part for particle forming, and an oscillating part driven by a piezoelectric actuator.…”

“…Pulsated orifice ejection method (POEM) is a droplet-based manufacturing process where mono-sized droplets are generated with the size of several tens to hundreds of micrometers [10][11]. It has nearly the main characteristics of drop-tube approach such as rapid and container-less solidification during drop falling, hindering heterogeneous nucleation and promoting under-cooling.…”
