The Development of Continuous Hydrographic Datum Using Geodetic Based Approaches: A Review

Abstract: The development of a continuous hydrographic datum along the coastal region for a precise datum determination for any hydrographic survey works is very important. The development started in 2005 by France that developed the first phase of Bathymetry with reference to the Ellipsoid (BATHYELLI) and its second phase in 2011. Then in 2009, the United Kingdom with collaboration with Ireland developed the Vertical Offshore Reference Frame (VORF), followed by the Continuous Chart Datum for Canadian Water (CCDCW) in 2… Show more

“…Traditionally, data from the tide gauge stations have been exploited to establish a localised tidal datum, such as the Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT), Mean Sea Level (MSL), and Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT) along the coast [1,2]. Currently, there are 19 continuously operating tide gauges in Malaysia by the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (DSMM) [3,4]. Accordingly, Malaysia has a maritime area of 55,629 km and 329,960 km of land area [5].…”

“…The height separation between tidal datums and datum references, through period observed soundings, are used in hydrographic surveying to determine the vertical control, which is used to reduce seafloor depth to estimate the CD [3]. Although the accuracy of hydrographic surveying in CD estimation is high, this processing makes it difficult to estimate the CD in real time, and the bathymetric surfacing algorithm have difficulty dealing with period sound observations [1,4].…”

“…Furthermore, today, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is commonly used in geoid modeling, ocean tide modeling, hydraulic datums and many maritime applications [3][4][5]. Thus, the integration of tidal and GNSS measurements is the most appropriate solution for a continuous and accurate hydrographic datum [3,4,6].…”
