“…Since in literature data of intrathyroidal iodine concentration are sparse, a comparison of the obtained values at this point is, difficult. Malvano et al (1972) determined by neutron activation analysis iodine concentrations between 600 and Table 2. Analytical recovery of iodine.…”

“…However this technique requires expensive laboratory equipment. The neutron activation analysis (Hoch et al, 1971;Malvano et al, 1972) also requires expensive apparatus, but is a suitable reference method, working without iodine loss and with high analytical sensitivity. The ceric arsenite reaction, first described by Sandell and Kolthoff in 1934, has become the most frequently applied method of iodine determination in various biological materials.…”

“…The techniques used to measure total T4, T3 and TSH (Kits Sorin, Italy; Serono, Italy) have been presented by us in recent publications Platzer et al 1975). The iodine content of water was measured with the technique reported by Malvano et al (1972), the iodine content of food was measured after lyophilization and acid digestion according to the same principle (Sandell Se Kolthoff 1939;Malvano et al 1972). To assess the influence of iodine deficiency on the physical and mental development of school-age children, data from a previous survey in the Upper Isarco Valley (1220 m) on weight, size and body surface and data from 67 children from the Alto Adige in Raven's tests, as well as data from a comparable population from the villages of Keimen and Gramais in Tyrol, Austria, were included in our evaluation.…”

“…The use of a sodium chloride solution prepared from analytical reagent-grade hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide was adopted . 32 Table 3 shows the results obtained for the determination of iodide in two iodinated salts and for the recovery study. The corresponding results obtained for various cow's milk and infants' powdered milk samples are summarized in Table 4.…”
