The determination of growth in Akkeci (White goat) female kids by various growth models

Abstract: This study aimed to determine the growth of 26 Akkeci (White goat = Saanen × Kilis (Bı) crossbreed) female kids by measuring their body weight, withers height, body length, heart girth depth, heart girth width, heart girth circumference, leg circumference and volume index in two-week intervals from birth to 500 days of age and by using different growth models (Monomolecular, Gompertz, Weibull and Richards). An approximate volume index was calculated by multiplying the values of heart girth depth, body length a… Show more

“…The value of R 2 was higher because one person recorded all the data around the year and animals were selected in the beginning of the study and closely monitored. These results were in accordance with Karakus et al (2008) and Topal et al (2004) Karakus et al (2008), Topal et al (2004) and Kor et al (2006) reported R 2 ranging from 97.8 to 99.7 but Tsukahara et al (2008) reported a slightly lower value (93.7 %) for this model. The present findings also matched with Akbas et al (1999) who by comparing different models reported that Brody model had a good fit with highest R 2 .…”

“…These curves have been used to estimate mature body weight and increase in liveweight in goat and sheep by many research workers (Kor et al 2006, Jenkins & Leymaster 1993, Nasholm & Danell 1990, Nasholm 1990, Salah et al 1988, Moore 1986.…”

“…The age at slaughter for the native chickens were, however, lower than those reported by [31], this might be ascribed to their genetic makeup and several non-genetic factors [32]. The slaughtering age is correlated with growth which in turn is influenced by the feed availability besides other environmental factors.…”
