PurposeThis research investigates the effect of accessibility to points of tourist interest (buffer) and direct and indirect spatial spillover effects of agglomeration economies on tourism industry revenues in Spain.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from the Bureau van Dijk's (BvD) Orbis global database. The data were analysed using a spatial econometric model and the Cobb–Douglas production function.FindingsThis study reveals that hotels located inside the buffer zone of points of tourist interest achieve better economic outcomes than hotels located outside the buffer. Furthermore, the results show that there is a direct and indirect spatial spillover effect in the hotel industry.Practical implicationsThe results provide valuable information for identifying areas where the agglomeration of hotels will produce a spillover effect on hotel revenue and the area of influence of location characteristics. This information is relevant for hotels already established in a destination or when seeking a location for a new hotel.Social implicationsThe results of this study can help city planners in influencing the distribution of hotels to fit desired patterns and improve an area's spatial beauty.Originality/valueThe paper provides insights into how investment, structural characteristics, reputation and location affect hotel revenue.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the number of hotel rooms, restaurants, tourist visits, and GDP on hotel and restaurant tax revenues in Kuantan Singingi Regency, as well as to determine which variables have the most impact on hotel and restaurant tax revenues. From 2010 to 2020, the researchers employed a quantitative research design with time series data from the Regional Revenues and Expenditures Budget (APBD) and the Kuantan Singingi Regency's Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The multiple linear regression model is used to determine whether the independent variable has a significant effect on the dependent variable. The findings revealed that the number of hotel rooms and restaurants in Kuantan Singingi Regency had no significant impact on hotel and restaurant tax collections. In Kuantan Singingi Regency, the amount of tourist visits and GDP have a substantial impact on hotel and restaurant tax collections. The amount of tourist visits and GDP have the greatest impact on hotel and restaurant tax revenues in Kuantan Singingi Regency from 2010 to 2020.

Tourism demand and its determining factors have been extensively explored over the past decades. Traditionally, the study of tourism demand modeling had focused on the use of time series models and forecasting. Nonetheless, during the last years the literature has revived the approach of gravity models, centered on structural dimension as opposed to dynamic factors. This survey aims to provide a useful overview and detailed information that discipline the existing literature and help future researchers about this field. To do so, this study reviews 143 key published papers that apply a gravity equation framework to tourism demand revealing that it has been used mainly in the context of bilateral tourist movements. Results show how, although the list of determining variables of tourist flows can be very large, GDP, population and distance are the most preponderant ones. Moreover, there are important challenges to be addressed by researchers in terms of empirical application of structural gravity models to tourism.
